The filters stick up about 1/3 inch too high. So the cover won't go over it fully.
That being said....on my e90 335i I have cone filters without a cover....isn't it possible to just run these without the cover?
I wouldn’t these engine run extremely hot would defeat the purpose IMHO.
That's a good point. I thought my n54 ran hot

Man it's so close 1/3 inch eh? Yeah, as CT335xi said running completely without cover may reduce it's effectiveness and hence it will be no better (if not worse) than X5M air filters. Maybe you can close lid at least on the back? Not sure if that will be any better.
Tough situation man.

Actually just thinking about closing the back of the lid only. I feel like that's worth it no !

Lol I would actually use some black duct tape to close off openings on the side and front - but that's just a cheap fix as I can't see myself paying $1000 for a lid from Dinan.

You could add some high temp insulating tape to the cover edges and raise it so when you tighten down, it would moderately raise while still sealing but without pics who knows.

Sorry for the delay folks.

Here they are installed minus the cover.

I'm determined to find a solution for this

Looks great! Is it a solid fit? Is there an increase in turbo noises under load and letting off the accelerator?

Maybe someone with a 3D printer can make a spacer to make the box higher to fit the DINAN filters. Then all you will need is longer bolts.

There is definitely some nice added sound under load. Letting off the gas I didn't hear anything but I also wasn't paying attention for any noises.

To revive this thread somewhat....anyone have blueprints of the cover that we could 3D print?

I actually spend a little bit more time playing around with the stock cover, and it seems to pretty much fit very well I'm sure it's pushing down on the filters a little but so far so good. I'll take some updated pics later this afternoon.

I do have to say there is zero difference in sound with the cover on, with the cover off you can hear the filters which I do miss.
The child in me wants to figure out a way to make the Aftermarket intake from the five series work with our car

Maybe you can use some washers for height and gasket/foam tape to seal off the intake.

Let me know how it turns outs. It's time to replace my filter and this is what I was thinking of doing.

Did you ever log IATs? I'm wondering how much of a difference the lid even makes. My thought is that it gets so hot under the hood that the lid might not even make that much of a difference.

I don't have a way to log yet but I doubt it. Maybe once I get my bm3 tune it may make a difference but until then I would feel the difference to be negligent.

Wow, those filters look great!

If they don't fit, what about adding these BMC from IND? Looks killer.

They're bmc filters. And much smaller than oem X5M and 2x as expensive.

Lot of time talking about this though. : and you will see.

I don't thinking running the filter housing without the cover makes a whole lot of sense. The stock system pulls air from in front of the radiator where the air is cool whereas if you leave the cover off you'll pull some air from the front, but also some of the hot turbulent air from around the engine.

I hear what you're saying and that makes sense if you're just sitting idle. However when you're moving (when it matters), if the cover is off, the cool air still comes in from the front and should just push all of the warm air back towards the rear of the engine.

It's just a hypothesis but my guess is when idling, filters with no covers would yield IATs 15-20* higher and only 2-3* higher when in motion.
