Dash cam power connection ?

Does the passenger side fuse panel have constant 12v and accessory power. Searching and it seems like the fuse panel only has constant 12v fuses. Not sure if I want to keep my camera on all the time. Not sure if this will drain ur battery.

Check out blackboxmycar.com

That is where i purchased all my accessories to have my dashcam run based on power levels. I use their magicsafe unit with my Blackvue DR650S hardwired through the car into fuse box using their add-a-fuse, and it shuts off when the battery reaches a certain voltage level to protect the battery as well as allow the dashcam to keep recording and capture footage when I exit the car for several hours.

They have a live chat at blackboxmycar and are extremely helpful, even for non-customers.

So I take it the fuse panel at the passenger side door well only has constant power. Anyone know if there is an acc fuse?

If you don't want the dashcam to run AT ALL while the car is off, you can tap into the sunroof also. I did make a thread for this regarding radars, as my radar is hardwired into my sunroof. Power cuts off to that as soon as ignition is switched off.

However, I do really recommend checking out blackboxmycar and speaking with them as they can have you set up to have it operating while the car is off for a few hours on the battery until it reaches a safe level to cut itself off of power.

I got access to constant power and acc in the fuse panel. Camera was working fine until I started the car. Lol. Doesn't work anymore. Only my luck.

constant power means it would run when the car is off and ultimately drain the battery at some point?

I had to leads coming out of the camera wire harness ground, constant, accessory. I had it going and after I started the car it doesn't power on. It's a cheap 50 dollar camera. Oh well

I tapped into the cigarette lighter socket power feed. There is a wire easily accessible once you remove the passenger side center console front lower trim piece which is easy to do. Then just run your wire forward and up under the passenger footwell area and up the A pillar to your camera. Works great and since cigarette lighter stays on for about 10 minutes after car is shut off, it records me walking away and what happens around the car for the next few minutes too.

Thanks for the feedback mike. Do u know if there is access to the cigarette lighter fuse in the front passenger fuse box? I would rather use a piggy back fuse holder. For now I have mine connected to a smaller 10amp fuse in accessory. Good thing is if there is any impact the camera automatically turns on and records a few min.

Hi, Mike: 10 minute after shut off engine, or turn off accessory, or lock the door? It seems like mine still has power feed after 10 minutes after I shut off the car but I remain in the car. Thanks.

For the front lighter it's fuse F37.

To go back to OP's original question, I power my dash cam from OBD2 fuse for permanent 12v and PDC sensor fuse for switched 12v. Camera records constant when driving, then either in response to a knock, or one frame per second (you choose) when the car is parked. Set a value for minimum battery voltage and the camera will shut down to save battery if need be. Note I'm RHD, so not sure if fuse boxes are in the same locations

This is my first car with keyless entry. I just figured out that once I open the door and sit inside, all accessories are powered up, including cigarette lighter. Unlike older car, I need to insert the key and turn to 'ACC'.

I have mine hooked up for ACC power only since the cam has a battery in it. I used an add a fuse with I believe fuse 36. Fuses 36 & 37 are charging ports (Cig lighter, USB,...). Fuse 38 is sunroof. Check this DIY out: http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1132110

My previous car I used a rubber spatula to snake the long dash cam cord from the mirror to the A pillar, behind the glove box and into the cigarette lighter socket in the forward lower console. Will that work on the x5? I don’t want to screw with wiring or fuses and I don’t use the lighter socket for anything else.

I have the smokers package. What is that? Ashtray and cig lighter ?

Do you have a test light? Or just try random fuses until you find one.
A fuse tap would make the connection easy. Can buy on Amazon. I forget what size fuses the x5 use. Mini?
