I want to add another option over the roof box. If you have the hitch, you should consider this.

It's pricey, but I had the hitch anyway. I like it because I don't like getting up on the sills of the car doors to get "stuff" out of the box on the roof. I was at a ski resort once and saw a guy with ski boots on with one boot on his seats and another boot on the door trying to get his stuff down. He sure did not look comfortable and he almost fell! I also saw guy getting skis from his roof box and he dropped them on his car!

I have had the bumper box since 2008 and it's working fine. I even wrote a review on amazon.

As for bicycles, after running my car into the garage a few years ago with the bike on the roof I prefer hitch mounted bike carriers. I put skis and lumber on the roof rack when needed.

What's the load rating for the OEM cross bar?

Manual that came with the bars only refers to not exceeding the total payload rating for the roof, so I assume that the bars will take more weight than what's called out in the car's manual.
Not surprising/makes sense. If you are thinking of carrying something that you think would break the bars, it's prob too much weight for the roof anyway.

Sorry....can't dig it up. emptying out the house of remodel and I have no idea where I put the papers. At any rate, the cargo box is rated 150 lbs. My guess is the bars are 150-200. I would not go more.

My OEM touareg is rated at 100 kg, that's 220 lbs. The aeroblade is rated at 160 lbs.

Found the following rating in the manual:

Approved roof load capacity lbs/kg 220/100, same as touareg.

It's interesting that with third row seat, the gross vehicle weight improves almost 200lbs.

Approved gross vehicle weight lbs/kg 6250/2835
With the third row of seats lbs/kg 6460/2930

Anyone have the BMW Crossbar with the mountain bike carrier? With the crossbar alone, I hear wind buffetting on the crossbars. Now that I've added the bike carrier, not only do I hear the buffetting but also a whistling noise. Anyone experience this?

I've intalled my cargo box as well. I have the BMW roof rack just like you did but I have 18 yakima skybox carbonite.

MattBianco Do you have the OEM bars in the prescribed 460mm back from front rail edge / 700mm spread locations?

I Just bought a Thule Sonic XL and the furthest back you can mount the box with the OEM bars / bar location leaves 10" between the open tailgate and the box with a small overhang over the windshield.

I looked at the Thule bar instructions for the F15 and Thule seems to specify 700mm between bars but encourages moving the bars further back to reduce noise

I followed the instructions on the OEM bars, but not by measuring with a tape/ruler. I saw the diagram in the instructions, and approximated based on where the mount location was relative to the door. I mounted once side, then I used a string to measure from the front the mount to a memorable location near the windshield. I then marked the spot on the opposite door.

I tried go as far back as I could, while complying with the instructions' diagram, believing it would be beneficial to for noise. OEM gives you stickers so you can mark the spot for future removal and reinstall of the crossbars. Any sticker would do, and if Thule dos not have it, I recommend you improvise and stick something there. As you can see from my pictures in the thread, the hatch opens fine, and as I mention, you cannot see the front of the cargo box from inside. Noise level is low even with the box, and barely noticeable with just the cross bars. Forgetting the plastic piece that goes in the groove of the cross bars will cause a loud whistling sound.

Hope this helps.

I just installed the crossbars and you need to really force turn clockwise to hear the loud click, it's really noticeable, don't be afraid to turn it will not break.

Boy was that fast! Thanks. I would never use- more concerned about the absent minded press of the button and $1,000 worth of damage that would ensue...

Have an E70 with Whispbars, but am trading up to F15. Realize I need new bars due to different rails. I also want to get a lower cargo box as I'm hoping to be able to get in to my 7" high garage with the box on. Tired of parking outside and taking the box off alone in the snow sucks.

Can anyone here share experience with heights? What I think/found:
F15 height - 69.4"
Yakima Lowpro - 11.5" (is that from bottom of clamp under bar or where it sits?)
Whispbars - can't find anywhere as I guess it depends on rail type.
84"-69.4"-11.5" =3.1"

I assume the bars add 4/4.5" but where is the vehicle measured? Center? Rail tops?

I suppose I could order all the gear and put it on and give it a try, but it's a pain to return if it doesn't.

Raising the height of the opening is too much hassle. Garage guys told me we'd have to order new doors and rework the openings.

Any advice? I'm not married to whispbar if I could find a solution that shaves off an inch or two. Cargo mostly used for wet and dirty skis, so I don't need the double height (have one already if needed).

Thanks!

Guys, what's the maximum speed you were driving at with the box attached? I'm planning to buy Thule Dynamic 900 but am a bit sceptic due to the 130km/h limit since driving through Germany at this speed is...well not something I would like to pursue

I've done 120 mph in my F30 with a roof box on top. I'm not paying your insurance deductible if you do the same and your roofbox rips your bars off, but I did it and it didn't seem to harm anything other than my fuel economy.

I switched from the OEM bars to a Whispbar and it is literally silent, even with the sunroof open. Much quieter with the box on as well and drops the height about 3/4 inch. You also lose the 2-3% fuel economy penalty with OEM. They also look better as they are lower profile and have a gentle curve that matches the roof curve. It was about double the price.

That being said if anybody in Canada wants gently used OEM bars they're sitting in my garage and I'll part with them for cheap. PM me if interested. They are still a quality bar but I'm much happier all around with the Whispbar.

I've driven with a box loaded with about 40kg of weight at about 85 mph. I'd observed any guidance provided by Thule and the cross bar manual.
