I heading to the dealership on the weekend. I'll ask if they have a leather guy that can restore it.
I think for me, it was either the previous owner or the dealership I bought it from that tried too hard to clean the steering wheel. It's quite shiny, but I will either have to live with it or buy the alcantara steering wheel. The problem is, that one REALLY cannot be cleaned. And my wife drives the X5 the most, so you know that goes: make up and lotion galore.
Many buttons in my wife's E90 are peeling. It is a good thing, at least she is trying to think about all those lotions and creams. "Look, honey, if your creams do THIS to plastic, imaging what it dies ti your skin?" Visibly made her think)))
Lol. Too funny.

Who here has the alcantara steering wheel? How does it hold up in a daily?

So I tried something new over the weekend: clean MF with warm water. Definitely the best the steering wheel has looked in a long time.

Did it take away the sheen? it's so cold here don't think I'll try it for a few weeks.

It did, and honestly cleaned it really well. A million times better than the variety of leather cleaners I tried in the past.

Same here. They work great on my leatner seats, just not my steering wheel. Given that a lot of us are complaining about it, I think there is a larger issue.

Actually you are right. The cleaner works really well on the seats. I'm eager to try the hot water. Thanks for the tip.

I've only ever seen Alcantara wheels wear really poorly, though i've never owned one myself.

Mercedes AMG Alcantara wheels are particularly bad.

I get a microfiber towel then I soak it with warm to semi hot water. Rub it through the whole steering wheel and repeat the process. I did this twice and I always get very good results. You might encounter some areas where sheen will show no matter what but it’s better than having the whole shiny steering wheel.

This makes sense since it is essentially the oils from our hands that make it shine...

So what about the warm wet MF to the Dakota seats? Mine's are shiny, especially the driver's bottom, and I've just given up on cleaners, don't trust any of them anymore.

Should work really well. All car leathers are coated these days, so warm water with a clean MF should do the job.

I use a steam cleaner, after using it, it brings steering wheel to a nearly new condition.

Yes. Works great, opens up all pores. I do that type of deep cleaning 3-4 times per year.

Sorry to bring the old thread up. Finally found a simple and quick easy way to clean the shiny leather steering wheel and bring back the matte color back.

These were the items I used:
- Leatherique cleaner
-Zaino leather conditioner/lotion (I used this over Leatherique rejuvenate because it's quicker)
- electric facial brush (retired from my wife) but you can get it cheaply on amazon or at Sephora
- boar hair or horse hair pencil brush for tight and hard to reach area
- 2 microfiber towels (one to wipe off the cleaner and one to wipe off extra leather conditioner/lotion)

First I sprayed some leatherique cleaner onto a quarter of the steering (so the cleaner didn't dry up while I clean the other section). Then sprayed some cleaner onto the electric facial brush and start cleaning. I let the electric brush did all the cleaning for 20-30 seconds and i didn't apply too much pressure. After that, I sprayed the leather cleaner onto a horse hair pencil brush to clean the hard to reach area such as the curves around 3/6/9 position. Remember to clean in circle like how you wax the car. Use a microfiber towel to wipe off the cleaner on the steering. Volla!!! The steering is back to matte black color! I put leather conditioner on my palm and applied it onto the steering by hands and wipe off the residue with another microfiber towel.

Below are before and after photos

Hope this help you guys.

Can you post a few more pictures preferably during daytime and without camera flash?

Look forward to seeing them. And nice work on getting it cleaned!
