It would be great to find out if BMW has addressed this in a newer version of the replacement part. It has got to be costing them.

No need to remove the PCB board, just push down on the ring on one side with something flat and the other side will pop up to grab. When reinstalling cover, make sure to align the three plastic posts with the holes in the bottom PCB.

I have to wonder what the real function of this plastic ring is and what inadvertent effects could happen with it removed. Filling a gap to keep out dust sounds the most logical. Otherwise, I would think it was supposed to provide a bit more friction resistance to make the knob feel tighter when turning.
Any tips on how to pop off the cover? Don’t want to break anything...

Supposed just use a plastic pry tool and apply pressure to an edge it the opposite side pops up

Mine is at the dealership now to have it replaced. I originally went to have the shadow line trim pieces replaced due to fading. While I was there I mentioned that some of the gaskets needed replaced and that the idrive knob sticks. Showed it to him and he immediately said they would look at it. Called me a few hours ago and said it will be covered under warranty, as well as the gaskets around 3 doors but not the driver door. Happy that they are taking care of these things under warranty, even though I'm the second owner. Not to mention they refinished my 469 rims as well.

Yeah they have been pretty good.
I wonder if they honour warranty in Canada regardless of being second owner or not. I also added it to MyBmw on BMW website and it says warranty is active til almost end of this year.

Do you also have the ceramic controls? They just replaced mine today. Didn't realize just how bad it was til I started rotating the new one.

My is still at the dealership... third day ... still waiting for the new controller to come in, having fun with the loaner in the mean time.

Yeah mine was there for two days. Hate not having my vehicle. Next time I'm gonna ask about a loaner, I always get the free shuttle.

Mine is also a 2015 but it's only the 35i. It is definitely a design flaw causing them to break, or poor quality control. I don't know how much it cost for one but I imagine it isn't cheap.

Seems to mainly affect the ceramic controls. Wonder what the difference is between them and the normal ones. I would think it would only be aesthetics. :

Sheesh. And that's U.S currency. All for that little plastic ring inside that cost about .02 cents.
My dealership never includes prices when it's warranty work. Wish they would.

'15 50i with the ceramic. Had mine replaced a couple years ago under warranty. When I took it in, they had done enough of them by then, they knew what it was. It's been fine ever since. Nice to know I can fix it myself real quick if I need to. I'm not gonna complain. Almost 4 years now, and this is literally the ONLY problem I've had with this vehicle. It's amazing to me, considering the overall complexity of these things.

Ya you'd think how often it fails they'd just provide replacement rings. But they replace the whole darn thing. What a waste. And I think that's just the cost of the idrive controller. Don't think that includes labor and coding which they said was required to replace for some reason. Either way I've never been able to change my interior colors since that coding they did.

Yeah I was told it had to be coded as well. Like I said in one of my other posts, I'm just happy they are doing these repairs under warranty for me.
My driver door seal/gasket was completely ripped off, and they said it wouldn't be replaced under warranty. Part was 33 dollars Canadian, labor was 124 I might just install that gasket myself.

Ya mine was torn on the bottom from my flight boots hitting it when I step in the car all the time. Ordered a new one the other day. Still need to install. Just lazy

Lol I hear ya. I've been wanting to put ppf on the hood and by the back wheels, I've just kept putting it off. Material is here waiting to be installed.

Hey guys, first time post in the F15 thread. I had an F25 but it was written off in an accident (not my fault, promise). Anyway, I just picked up my new to me 2015 F15 M sport and didn't notice before today I had this problem. Only owning it for 2 hrs it was already upsetting me.

Once again the forums have been awesome. As others have said, pulling the broken ring fixes the problem. I just used a very small trim removal tool, working around the edges of the knob until it popped off. The ring came out easy, and the knob popped back into to place easy. Works perfect now!!

Thanks guys. Loving the car so far...
