Muffler delete for 35i

So all the big boys 50i are doing their muffler delete with X pipe and it sounds amazing. Anyone doing some kind of the same thing for 35i?

I found one person having mpe and removed it to test but said it was too loud. Some cut up the stock muffler and mod it like M3. Anyone wants to share their setup and a clip of how it sounds?

Opening the exhaust valve is no where near muffler delete because of all the sound dampening material inside the muffler. I opened mine and could not hear any difference

I did it and it sucked. Don't do it, get the MPE....one of the best mods around!

Straight 6 motors don't generate a pleasant open exhaust sound like v8's or v6's. An open straight 6 will be very raspy and have a higher pitched sound that will be almost painful. Some kind of aftermarket or custom muffler setup will sound much better than an open pipe.

I felt what I believed was backpressure. Every time I stepped on that gas, the dash was vibrating. Thus, did not reach the point of installing tips, although, that was the aim. 50 is a different beast with 2 downpipes, which make a big difference.
Remember, these mufflers they put on are made for the specific vehicle.
Engineers ran tests to make sure there's no backpressure and nothing that will harm the engine.

Start putting money in your piggynbank for an MPE...am sure there will be an opportunity from a member as they brings cars back to stock for lease etc.

Yeah, unfortunately muffler delete doesn't sound good for 35i

MPE is best, but if money is of essence, then muffler delete and add some free flow aftermarket muffler that will sound good. Something like Flowmaster series, but you need to choose how aggressive you want it to be. They have lineup from a lot more aggressive than MPE and all the way to almost stock like quiet. I personally like their Flowmaster super 44 - it sounds deep (for 6cyl) and a bit like MPE:

And here's their lineup just for info:

It's cheap, trusted and proven and is easy to do: cut stock muffler and weld in Flowmaster (choose aggressiveness to your liking). You can also go with aftermarket double tips if you'd like.

44 is probably a bit to aggressive..was considering the Pro series.

My exhaust flap was removed when I was getting my tips powder coated and it did not sound good at all. Not deep and too much of a hum rather than a gargle. I would imagine it would be even worse with a muffler delete. The N55 needs a tuned muffler that was designed for it.

I've done a free flowing muffler on a 750 and a muffler delete on a Corvette and the both sounded great.

That's odd. It was a night and day difference for me.

Definitely want to do some type of aftermarket muffler. Very hard to find something that fits the f15 35i tho. Definitely not spending MPE money.

Only thing I found was someone who did the Flowmaster Super 10 which is listed as aggressive but sounds great IMO:

I've watched this video so many times and sounds fantastic however I fear it suffers from crazy amounts of drone. I was ready to buy that exact set up but the drone issue keeps me. from pulling the trigger.

My fears exactly. Which is why i still have it sitting in my basement for months and havent had it installed. I was just stumbled on another thread where the OP installed a Super 44 which I thought was too big. But seems like his muffler shop made it work. But he also did the rear M conversion kit.

Still, I would much rather the 44 than the 10 so its worth looking into.

Just an fyi, I have an exhaust cutout with a remote control to open and close the flap. The cutout is installed towards the rear left before it connects to the muffler. When flap is fully opened, it's basically a muffler deplete. It's loud but I don't think it drones much. At least just for me. I like that I have the option to make it quiet with a push of button.

So I finally just went for it and deleted my stock muffler. Found a great muffler shop that was able to do what I wanted with the Flowmaster 40 series delta flow and installed it no problem. It's a lot quieter than the super 10 and sounds beautiful, especially in sport mode. Even have some mild gurgles and pops when coming to just about any stop. Just the right amount of aggression I was looking for in a daily-driven family SUV.

As far as drone is concerned, I drove on the highway and cruised down normal side streets. There is barely any drone in comfort mode. If any, its totally managable. You can listen to music and talk to passengers just fine. I heard no drone in sport mode which makes sense since the RPMs are typically higher. (I typically always drive in sport mode since i coded it as my default mode on start up.)

Took about 2 hours and at a fourth of the price of an MPE, you can't lose. Very happy.

Your setup should be closer to that heatshield. Feel like it's too far back since it gets hot.

I had my super 10 installed with custom piping making it look like a real system. I also have a spark plug installed for later use. We also installed OEM valve system in it. Labor was $600.00. The setup sounds like it's an expensive setup and quality. There is no drone and is not crazy loud. Just enough sound to enjoy and when valves are closed it's like OEM sound.

I imagine the pipes and muffler all get the same temp. And since the muffler is a lot smaller than the stock, it shouldn't be an issue with heat. In fact, it should be less heat due to the smaller size. Im also not trying to tune and race this thing like I did my GTI back in the day. Just wanted some extra rumble that is family friendly while I cruise around.
