Dinan Stage 1 Install, X5 50i
So I'm reading the instructions and have been toying with installing this piggy back myself. It talks about electric vs mechanical wastegates and provides some images. The thing I'm not sure about is what Dinan is showcasing in the images. What they picture does not seem to be what I'm seeing, so am I good to install this setup or not? Below is a picture of the passenger side of my engine with the cover removed and a screenshot of the Dinan instructions, any feedback is appreciated! Also, if anyone knows what that scary looking rusted out component is and whether or not that's something I should be concerned with would also be nice. Thanks in advance!

fixed! forum didn't like my file sizes. Also a close up of the rusted component, right above the BMW logo almost directly in the middle of the engine.

That rust is normal - that's a hot side of turbo - exhaust side. Temperatures get very high there and no paint or coating will stand a chance - hence it's bare metal from the factory and it's no big deal. That side is directly connected to exhaust (cats).
Can't help with Dinan install, as I have no experience with it. Maybe others will chime in. That vacuum pot they are talking about is a wastegate actuator. We have 2 turbos (drivers and passenger side). Each turbo has that vacuum actuator on the side/bottom of it. You need to look in between turbos and try to see that vacuum pot. And then connect to it whatever Dinan wants you to connect - a hose or a plug. |

I think you need to look between the two hoses near the front center of the engine (partially visible in the far right of your photo) for the vacuum pot. If you don’t see a vacuum pot (mechanical waste gate), then you have electronic. My understanding is that the DINAN tune is incompatible with electronic, or at least you need to call them.

Pretty sure we have mechanical waste gates on the 50i. Also you're instructions seem to be incomplete. The part you posted is just determining the type of waste date.

Right, just wanted to make sure I had this part figured out before progressing. I'm most likely just going to pay someone to do this install with the Dinan intake at this point.

That will probably be tonight's endeavor, that does seem straight forward. Can anyone here speak to the time commitment for installing the Dinan Stage 1 piggy back? Maybe a couple hours?

Not sure about the sticker. You need to look for the vacuum pot or an electronic module as in the instructions from your first post.

Has anyone actually made a Dinan install DIY for the 50i? Couldn't find anything by searching.

I haven't come across one yet that has been specific to a f15/f16 50i.. It would be helpful if you could provide a walk through with additional photos and information.. I also have a 50i and curious to know how your installation goes as well as how noticable the additional power feels.

My sense is that since flash tunes have become so popular and they add much more power than the piggybacks - including Dinan - and at a much lower cost than the Dinan, there's less interest in the Dinan tune these days. For those interested in piggybacks, others are available for a fraction of the cost of the Dinan. Dinan has lost a lot of cachet in the BMW tuning game in the last couple of years.

I also noticed Dinan dropped their price by $800 for the 50i Stage 1 kit. Probably pretty low demand these days...
