Buying wheels on Craigslist, tips?

As some may have seen in other posts, I'm picking up a set of "new" with stickers 375 style 21" wheels, OEM. Guy seems legit enough, uses lingo like he knows a thing or two and promises they are take offs. Back of wheels have the E70 imprint along with various other imprints. Any tips for the swap besides looking for the rubber "hairs" to ensure they are new and checking the back of the wheel?

Are you able to meet him at the local wheel shop? You can balance them (you'll need it done anyway) and if they'll balance without issues - you are good to go. You'll also have an opportunity to check rims closer for any cracks or damage. I would also check under the caps for paint peeling off or corrosion signs. TPMS can be old too - considering it's a E70 rim.

Other than that I don't see issues.

If they are real BMW 21's they are from an X5M. Dont think BMW rims have a model stamp on the inside, not that I have ever noticed. There will be a BMW symbol, prolly BBS also, and where they were made. I have been disappointed many times from CL people that said they were genuine rims and were aftermarket knockoffs.

Cant remember the X5 year, maybe 2011-12 TPMS does work on F15. Was told it should not but I have an old E70 set that paired with my F15 fine.

Good idea. I've sold 2 sets of wheels at a wheel shop.

Right? Some of these wheels were manufactured for the previous generation X5M but they have also been an option on our F15s? I know the center bore on the previous generation x5m is different than ours from other posts.

Also, this is the sticker that is on the wheel. I see "F15" written on here and if I search the "BMW ASSY" number (2349590) then it takes me to this link: https://shop.bmw.com/bmw-us/en_US/p/...e-375/2349590/

So is it safe to say that these wheels were indeed put together for an F15 X5?

You said they were from an E70, not aware the 21's were an orderedable option until the F15. But now appears they were from a F15? Is it me or do those wheels in the pic not look exactly "new", might just be misleading.

"with stickers" and "take offs" seem to be contradictory

I'm not sure what vehicle they came off of, I just know the back of the wheel says E70. But a SKU search leads me to a 375 wheels description and the platform listed on them is F15. I actually found another post earlier today of the SAME EXACT SKU except it said E70 instead of F15 which leads me to believe I am safe.

Kinda lost but I guess I'll find out more Saturday morning (or I'll get shanked)...

Ok, I'll be the one to say it and get tomatoes thrown at. What's the price you are getting them for? I mean if it's not a good deal - I wouldn't push for it really. Rims are nice - I like them, but there are a LOT of other rims. Especially since E70 era we got so many rims and not only oem bmw ones. Vossen and bunch of other brands that are better imho than oem bmw ones for same price. Ok, I finished my rant. Just my opinion man.

$3500, for the package, I was going to grab VFS-2 22" wheels but I just feel more comfortable with 21" OEMs. I also wont rant again on how jacked up the roads are in RI which drove (pun intended) my decision.

It all worked out, I added a pic to the "375 Wheel Style" thread to try and be a bit more consistent, long story short is that I'm over the moon with the finale!

Craigslist is more hit than misses nowadays, you can typically can tell from your 1st message encounter with buyer/seller if they're full of it or not. How I usually gauge it is try to have a phone talk convo <not text> from jump.
Just be careful.[/QUOTE]

I agree, I've had primarily great experiences but continue to hear horror stories; I also agree with your strategy.

BMW makes the same style wheel for multiple year BMW X5s. Make sure the hub size and backspacing is correct for your year.

I bought new BMW wheels with tires and TPSM only to get home and find out they didn't fit the rear hubs.

after holding on to the incorrect set for months, I eventually tracking down the seller but eventually i got the correct wheels.

Bring a micrometer to measure the hub size to be 100% certain they will fit.

Factory wheels should be stamped for the model however the stamp is very faint and not distinguishable on all wheels.
