Just tried the launch control...wow

I was not prepared for the kick in the back...never thought that 40d could jump like that. I was driving and I had a friend with me. We both felt pretty sick for the next 10 min. My friend also got neck pain as he had not put his head back. I have driven numerous gtrs (never launched one though), I did 20 laps in a 29hp rotax cart the other day but never had that dizzy sensation...

I wanted the 35, and ended up buying the 50. I drove around for the breakin and still thought it was fast. When I tried launch control the first time I went straight home and showed the wife and kids. She was scared and the kids loved it. Now every time they get in the car with her they say mommy do turbo power!!!

Oh no. I smell another disclaimer coming up.
I checked on my launch control, but never actually tried it.
I can't imagine how much whiplash you will get with that high torque diesel engine.

Your clutch will only survive about 10 launch controls, then it will be shot and not covered under warranty... You'll get more than whiplash when you collapse with cost of replacing it!

Doubt it. Porsche say their PDK launch control is good for 2000 launches. Cant imagine the BMW one being good for 10...

I think the key here would be adding one word: 10 consecutive launch controls. And I honestly believe that this figure could be even less )) Even a Formula-1 car won't like having 10 starts in a row )

Been there and got a very expensive t-shirt! Was the SMG box on my old M3.

Granted things have moved on, but the amount of stress you are putting through the transmission of a 2 ton truck when you suddenly release all that torque upon it won't be good for it.

Would be interesting to get an official comment from BMW on using the launch control feature with regards to drivetrain longevity...

Since he was talking about his "old M3", I would assume manual transmission, which we obviously don't have.

Porsche just proved their new 911 Turbo could handle 50 consecutive launches via launch control. Quite impressive engineering.

Watch It happen here.

already tried launch control a couple of times on my 40d M sport. Quite fun but I don't use it too much times in a row. I also had it on my previous 911 991. One day I had a warning on the dashboard because I used it too much, the clutch was too hot : during the rest of the trip I wasn't able to switch to sport or sport+ mode anymore, I had to let it cool down.
I guess (hope) BMW also put some security controls with this feature to make sure your clutch will not heat too much as well.
Anyway, I don't think this feature would be limited to only 10 usage for the whole car lifetime, but 10 times in a row could be too much stress for the clutch though..

My advice : just use it sometimes, and let the clutch cool down for a while right after you used it.

Guys just RTFM all is described over there that engine need to be warm it mean need to drive above certain engine speed for aprox. more than 10 min and then you can try to use your Launch Control , afterwards you need to wait 5 minutes to cool the gear box and clutch down . all is in the manual so no need to speculate.just follow it.

Just to be clear, there is no "function" called Launch Control, it's basically hitting both pedals and then letting brake pedal go. Right?
