There's nothing missing in that lower grill area. They all have a gap or blank spot at either end of that grill. I suppose there's a reason, though I can't fathom what it might be. The half-open spot on the right side may be something diesel-specific. The 50i models like mine have a half-grill on the other side which has an oil cooler behind it.

The two "holes" are standard...for air flow I believe.

I'm assuming you have a 50i, so the open side on one side is for additional air for an additional oil cooler.

If I remember it all correctly.

When I did my front end conversion, I had a choice of both sides open or one...I went with both open as I have a 35i.

I believe the two holes you circled in yellow are ducts to cool the brakes. The slots on the side are for air flow over the front wheel and thru the side vent on the fender

OP has a diesel in his profile, so I assumed that's the vehicle in question and shown in the photo.

Cool thanks - mine is a 40d xdrive but I have seen other x5's with the 2 holes blocked off

No idea why I only have a ½ grill ..
again I've seen others with 2 x full grills

The 35i has both sides blocked. I think the ///M has both sides open, but it's a different front end altogether. The 50i (the picture attached is mine) has an open half-grill on the right side as you're facing the car (passenger side for a left-hand-drive car). And apparently yours has the left side half-grill. I wonder what the 50d has? And the hybrid? Not sure.

There are aftermarket grills out there to be had, so maybe if you're seeing something that deviates from the above, that's what you're seeing.
