CPO vs Extended Warranty

I'm on the hunt for a lightly used 15/16 50i. I'm having a hard time finding a CPO with the miles I want, color, options, etc. I'm starting to wonder if I should broaden my horizon to non-CPOs and just get an extended warranty.

I do not have experience with extended warranties but I've had a CPO Bimmer in the past. Anyone have experience with both and can provide some insight, recommendations?

I picked up a 2015 50i with 36k miles and it has a 2 year remaining bumper to bumper warranty. It's a private seller. Took a while to find it. Look hard

The 2015s should be staring to run out of factory warranty based on the fact they are nearing four years old at this point.

To the OP: BMW warranties have been dwindling in coverage over the years. CPO used to mean something, these days, it's referred to as CP-No.

Best coverage will always be factory coverage.

Interesting. Any experience with aftermarket extended warranties?

OP, I was in the same boat a few weeks back until I found a 2015 CPO xDrive35i of my desired color combination with ~27k and most of the packages I wanted. Needless to say that it took me quite a while on daily searching until I found what I wanted. The car has the remaining balance of the 48/50k factory warranty plus 12/unlimited miles of CPO warranty, which effectively I am covered until late 2020 in my case. I have a gripe, however, on the fact that the no-cost maintenance (brakes includes for MY15) ain't transferable to me as the 2nd owner. I will have to pay to "refresh" the balance and even extras should I wish to extend it further (again, at lease brakes are included for MY15, which is not the case for newer MY). I might not be 100% correct as I have just recently returned to BMW, but I'm fairly certain that's the case for MY15 and even MY16, but not newer...Overall I enjoy the car but not so much on BMW keeps dwindling down on drivers' benefits. Good luck with your search!

CPO is most definitely not bumper to bumper.

Buy from carmax, their 5-yr warranties are one of the best. Recently helped a buddy buy a fully loaded 2014 50i with 36k miles & paid $3.5k for 5yr/100k warranty.

I just picked up a '15 X5M with 1 year of factory warranty remaining plus 1 yr of CPO warranty. After speaking to my SA today, he said I can 'refresh' the original maintenance plan for 12 months for an additional $700 or a little less since he always takes good care of me.

After the 1 year extension plan, it jumps to $1700+. I need a brake service soon, (rotors & pads F+R), so this will pay for itself immediately. This is a 'no brainer' to me & made an appointment for next week to extend the plan & get the brake service done.

Yep, CarMax warranties are 1 of the best out there. All warranty work is carried out at your local authorized BMW dealer.

Found myself in a similar situation that I might need a brake replacement soon. I commute both city and highway (60/40) daily plus weekend trips so who knows I might need another brake replacement within the next two years following the refresh. $700+$1700 makes sense financially, and if you could get additional discounts then more power to you. Still a shame that BMW cuts down on their drivers' benefits, but at least for MY15 brakes are still included and then some...

I used to own a '13 X5 CPO that had a free transferable Maintenance Plan. I gladly took advantage of that. But yeah, '15 owners who have the choice should take advantage of it, provided the needed repairs cover at least the cost of the 'refresh'. '16 & newer owners get cheated so to speak as the coverage is much, much less.

Good to know on the Carmax warranty. 5yr/100k - That's 5 years since the car was originally put in service? If so, $3.5k seems a little steep for 2 years of warranty (assuming I find a 2015 coming off a 3 year lease).

I'm not worried about the maintenance plan. Just the CPO in case something major goes wrong.

No, it’s 5 yrs from the day you purchased the car from carmax, and mileage is miles on the odometer.

Nice, do you know if you can get a warranty like that if you buy a car from a random dealer or is that specific to Carmax?

Specific to carmax.
There are 3 plans, 5/75k, 5/100k and 5/125k
