Post Third party extended warranty - is this a good deal?

Apologies if you feel this has been covered in great detail already - I could not find an answer elsewhere on the forum.

I have a 2014 50i with M Sport and Executive package with 46K on the ODO. I failed to notice that my original warranty ran out in May, so the BMW plans are not available anymore. I like the car and want to keep it for another 5 years.

The dealer is offering their own plan for out of warranty vehicles - see attached for the High Tech plan.

24months/24k miles $4049 +tax
36months/36k miles $4849 +tax

I know there are people who strongly object spending any money on the extended warranties and rather spend it on preventative maintenance. My car has always been maintained by the BMW dealer, and has been worry free largely, and now I'm considering changing plugs, coils, filters. The car started making some whining sounds at low speed, which is likely something to do with transmission - at best it might be a clogged pump and a transmission flush and a new filter may fix it, but it may be something a bit more involved. I'm taking it in to be diagnosed next week - and if they find something crazy there, I think an extended warranty will likely be cheaper than paying for transmission repairs and hope I can delay purchasing until after it's definitive.

The devil is always in the details with these things, and while it looks comprehensive at first glance, please shoot holes in it. Is the coverage good enough for money? Is the price right?

The plan is exclusionary, which is good, but seems very expensive ($5k for 3/36!!!).

Yes, the cost is pretty high, although I hope to negotiate it down a bit - aiming for 15% or so and bring it closer to $4K before tax.

Most extended warranties don’t let you use benefits extensively for first few months. This is to prevent people from buying them when things are breaking down. Last I heard was 10% of the cost of warranty allowed for first 6 months. Unfortunately this is hidden somewhere in the fine print. Even if it’s not hidden, they will cancel your warranty and refund you the difference if you use them extensively. My old 5 series had slipping and I bought a good name brand extended warranty. Turned out to be the tranny. They refused to cover anything more than tranny flush first. The eventually said a full new tranny won’t be covered and they were willing to refund me what I paid minus what they paid for initial repair.

Your experience might be different. Just FYI.

It's not a fair question to be honest. You're paying so much because you're approaching 50k miles and out of warranty already.

I paid just over $4k for my bmw platinum warranty last year when I had 20k miles and it covers me till 2022/100k miles. With a $200 deductible. Haven't used it yet and don't expect to unless someone crazy happens however given a simple swap of the I drive controller was $1000 that I had done under factory warranty I didn't feel bad about this. However they don't covere everything. Especially anything with seals or bushings. But I know the 2014 has occasional issues with the iDrive resulting in needing to be replaced which is almost $3000 with labor and that's covered. Personally if I did it again I would just put it in a savings account and only use it to fix things I couldn't do myself which isn't much. Plus my parts are hella cheaper than my local dealer.

Look into CNA, some members have had a good experience with it, and much cheaper. contact forum member jiggz for details.

Also, the finance mgr (Brandon, I think) at landmark motors in Bellevue was selling some highly rated plans like fidelity almost at cost. Can’t vouch for them, but something for you to consider.

My dealer is pitching SecureNet from GSFS. Anyone know their extended warranty?

See the attached PDF for their brochure.

For as many warranty threads as there are. People need to remember how many factors can change the price as people try to compare against their deal.
1.)year
2.)mileage
3.)35i or 50i
4.) bmw or 3rd party
5.)mileage and term of warranty
6.)deductible
7.)what is covered/exclusionary

Without all of those it is pretty much impossible to compare someone else's deal vs yours.

Yeah my 49500 mile car they wanted like $6000 for another three years and 36,000 miles. That’s what I get to asking this late.

I ended up getting the dealer details from jiggz and purchasing an exclusionary CNA policy, which was much cheaper than any others - just over $3k for 4 years up to a total of 95k miles. Brandon at Landmark quoted higher than the original quote I got from Lithia.
