Used 2018 X5M vs new 2022 X3MC
Trying to decide on next car. Had a 2017 X5 5.0 that was totaled a couple years ago and bought a Yukon Denali to replace it. That decision is the subject of completely different story....
My BMW sales guy calls me a couple of weeks ago (he knew I had been looking) and tells they have a 2018 X5M coming off lease at the end of October. Priced around 68ish with 38-40k miles. 10 months of warranty left, so would have to buy extended (no way I am going uncovered on M car). So, with warranty, etc., let's call it 75k. So, I started looking at the prices and I can get a new X3MC for 80ish which I consider basically equivalent pricing. Question is - has anyone done this comparison? I haven't been in the new X3 at all, but I think it is grown and is now closer to the size of the F85. My ex-wife had the prior gen X3 and it was definitely smaller. Thoughts? |

It's tempting due to price. But two things did it for me: 1) GVWR rating on the X5M is enough to write it off on my taxes and 2) "there is no replacement for displacement!" IMO depends on lifestyle. If you want to play a video game and don't need to carry a lot of stuff and the X3MC fits you, you can save a lot of money. If you want more space, have a potential tax writeoff, want to tow, and/or have any other reasons, grab the X5M. P.S. I'm a driver, and the X5M is like a video game for me. Compared to anything else I've had (SUV driver for decades), it's the most insane vehicle and already way too fast for the street in stock form. Last edited by Blue By You; 09-06-2021 at 07:32 PM.. |

F85 all day. The tail lights on those new X3Ms are hideous! |

I tested the X3M and found the front seats too small. The bolsters forced my thighs together and squished my nugs and I'm normal size 6ft 175lbs. On comfort alone the X5M is the winner by far. You got to live it. Performance the X3M is superior since it weighs a lot less but it also has a lot more turbo lag and that was also really annoying.
F85X5M brakes tend to squeal and that's the only downside it seems to these cars. Ask the same Q in the X3M forum.

F85. The X3 is going to take a massive depreciation hit, is much smaller inside, and as noted doesn’t hit the GVWR to take a tax write off (assuming you can do that). I know the used car market is stupid right now since demand is ahead of supply but I think their ask is a tad high.

Thanks. You guys have reaffirmed my initial thoughts. One important difference (to me at least), is the X5 has a tailgate. For the life of me, I don't know why more SUVs don't have that. It is so useful. It is one of the things I hate about my Yukon.

Something else to add, the X5M can seat 5 comfortably, whereas the X3M can seat 4 comfortably.

Plus the X3M depreciation makes the used F85 a no-brainer: https://caredge.com/bmw/x3/depreciat...00&o=5&m=12000

Yes it does, with just over 500 horses, and lighter than a X5M it moves. I think that BMW has a winner on its hands, if I didn't love my X5M, I could see a X3M in my future.
