Cooling fans

Hi everyone! New owner of a 2017 f85. Loving it so far. Quick question. Do the cooling fans typically stay on for about 10 minutes after shutting the car off? Just want to make sure I don’t have a bad temp sensor. Thx!!

Yeah it's common. Happens to mine as well.

Actually it runs a lot more than what I had expected. We have an M550 which runs the fans for a bit after hard driving at the tail end but this X5M runs the fans regardless of hard or regular driving, even with small trips.. guess its the way the engine is designed.

Totally normal - even doing a small 10 minute gentle drive, they are staying on for 10 or so mins afterwards.

Congrats - nice ride. Welcome to the club. I can see you've been using the M1 and M2 buttons, need a bit of silver/chrome cleaner on the exhaust tips, they always go black after using those buttons for a bit of blast.

Thanks y’all! Quick question on the tail pipes. Can the actual pipes be replaced? Wouldn’t mind getting black ones. Not ready to get a full exhaust yet!!

You could paint the chrome tips (they aren't removable like on some other BMW models). When I picked up my X6M my tips were satin black, although as my car is Carbon Black I figured I'd prefer them to be chrome. To my surprise, mine had been painted, so some steel wool and paint stripper I was back to chrome.

Otherwise you may be able to find something like this local to you (I doubt any of this is original Akrapovic though, I guess they are just replica tips that they weld on!)

Prolonged cooling fan running after engine shutdown has a cause and a consequence:

1. It is required to cool the hot turbos enclosed in the V8 "valley", where their extra retained heat would cook plastics and other thermally sensitive stuff;

2. It depletes battery life, requiring its early replacement in a couple of years.

One solution is to connect a battery tender (say, a C-TEK) as soon a possible after engine stop.

Eisenmann. I have a Race version on mine as I didn't want a full catback setup. You do have to cut the pipes to get a new muffler on though since it's one piece for OEM.
