Just did this install over the weekend. Installation is a breeze. For the AC panel you don't have to pull the knobs as it's a direct replacement if you get a panel from the F series. Pull the dash trim and the panel is held by 2 torx bolts up top. You'll need to pry out the small plastic trim below it where the usb connection is to fully remove. Just a heads up so you don't make the same mistake as I did there's a number of iDrive controllers and the later models have silver trim between the buttons and the buttons are different. Sure you could probably fix this with coding but I preferred the silver trim on the controller as it matches the other interior pieces. See attached for reference and you can also see the older shifter.

Looks great! Lucky you got the ceramic unit from F series. I wasn't able to find one for decent price so I went with 7 series and had to cannibalize it to get to ceramic parts

It's too bad that BMW does not sell a ceramic repair kit as they do for the silver knobs:

This also gives some clues as to the parts needed to swap over if you don't want to disassemble the dash (though that is not hard).

i have a 2014 550ix with ceramic im going to sell so im thinking to swap them before i sell it...it does look identical i hope it works
