Resetting Final Drive (rear diff) Service

Closest dealership is 10 hours from me, I bought the car (f85) about a month ago from a non-BMW dealer and figured while I was nearby, I would swing in to the BMW dealership, see if they could provide me past maintenance records, and and have them look at a trailing wiring error I was getting.

The dealership was great, provided me with all the service history, had to order a part for the trailer error, so I made an appointment around Thanksgiving when I was going to be in town.

When they plugged in my key, it told them I needed a brake fluid flush, replacement of final drive fluid (rear diff), and micro filters replaced in the next 1400 miles or so.

I hate bleeding brakes (without a helper) and they only wanted 160.00 for brake fluid service, so I added that to my next service when they were fixing the trailer module. The other items I think they wanted 550.00 for and I was more than happy to take care of those myself.

I ordered up and replaced the micro-filters and ordered the gear oil, plug and gasket for the rear diff.

When I brought the car in for the service, I let them know that I replaced the micro-filters and they were happy to reset the system that tracks the micro filter service reminders (as that item does not show up on my resettable service by holding the odometer button) at no charge.

I hadn't yet replaced the rear gear oil and never thought to ask them to reset that light. I plan on doing it this weekend. What system exactly tracks that stuff, as it doesn't appear to be a part of the CBS reminders?

I have a few scan tools, Carly, ISTA, bimmercode, but can't seem to find anything? Is this strictly tracked on the key fob itself? I will be back in the area for Christmas, so I guess worse case, I can ask them to reset it for me, but I would like to do it on my own...?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I haven't heard of the newer cars tracking rear diff fluid life.

Most things can be resent from the cluster.

The fob only copies service info from the truck.

This is reset though ista. The car tracks diff fluid life but not through normal CBS interface. It's important to fill the correct fluids and levels (there is a specific volume required for each of the 3 diff chambers, if fluid is coming out the fill holes, it's overfilled).

The main reason you should reset this through ista is that the friction modifiers change as the fluid wears and the controller for the diff compensates.

If your dealer can't find this, I can send you a screenshot this weekend.

Thanks for the response.

I did find directions on refilling it. I was planning on just measure what I drain out and refill it with the same amount of fluid.

As for ISTA, I will ha e to fire that up, I haven't used it since having a e60 M5 a few years ago.

I am sure I will have questions once I hook up the computer, thanks for the help.

Here are a few critical things for the rear diff service.

Oil Capacities:
Center SAF XO: 0.95L
Left SAF Carbon Mod: 0.54L
Right SAF Carbon Mod: 0.58L

I used Liqui Moly 2048 in the center section as the BMW branded fluid is impossible to find and there is nothing special about it anyway. For the left and right chambers, use genuine Castrol SAF carbon mod. This is used by a lot of different car makers and sold in their branded bottles. I found the AC Delco branded bottles to be the least expensive. Look for AC Delco 92184900 which is a Holden part number.

Make sure you have a way to measure the fluid you are putting in, this is a good option

To reset the diff in ISTA, you need to run the "QMVH Oil Change" service function.

If you are looking for different options to source the Castrol SAF Carbon Mod fluid many OE part numbers are listed here

Thanks for the help.

The more I look at this the more confused I get. Lol.

I will be near a dealership around Christmas and might just have them do it. What ever happened to the days of pulling the drain plug and filling it up til fluid came out of the fill hole?

Here are the directions I found and the fluid I ordered:

Edit: Not sure why the photos are zoomed in, if clicked on, they should show the whole photo.

I don't think you have the right fluids listed. Here is the documentation from ISTA/TIS:

Basic transmission, centre:
BMW Synthetics OSP 83 22 2 365 987 1000 ml
Variable ratio transmission left/right:
BMW final drive oil SAF-Carbon Mod. 83 12 0 445 832 3 x 500 ml

from here: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...-drive/1EYYaQR

And you will need 6 replacement drain plugs to do all 3 chambers, not two.

It is possible (and reasonable) to only change the oil in the center section as you point out in your documentation. It all depends on how crazy you want to go with maintenance. For $50 in additional fluids, I figured I had nothing to lose.

Wow, the warning seems to indicate to DO NOT change the one with red-plugs.

I didn't know this either. Need to research more, was going to do all 3 chambers.

Ya, BMW likes to make it as confusing as possible.

I am sure it is simple once you do it once, but I decided not to mess with it. Have an appointment on the 27th.

I'd closely recheck their work and watch out for issues and follow up with them quickly.

Ahh now I am wondering if they messed up...

So, I dropped off my car with 2qts of the synthetic M fluid, which I believe .95qts goes into the rear.

I never thought about it when I picked up the car, but the service advisor said, "we used your fluid in the rear and it looks like they only charged you for 20.00 in fluid on the front diff, I don't think 20.00 is the correct charge, but I am not going to question it

<good enough, or so I thought>

On the 2 hour drive to my in-laws, I got to (over)thinking.....

I thought only .95 fluid is used in the rear....but they used 2qts that I had provided them??

Now I am panicked that they over-filled the rear. I tried calling but they are closed for the day...arg.

Here is the receipt they gave me, can't really decipher it...

Any ideas? I planning on calling and trying to talk to the mechanic tomorrow...

Update, talked to service today, all is good, they have the extra fluid there, they just forgot to put it in the car.

Phew, all is good.

I'm scheduled for a complete fluid drain/refill - trans, diff, coolant and brake fluid - as a preventative maintenance. I'm most fearful some dealership moron could mess up a perfectly running vehicle. I'm tempted to DIY to be 100% certain.

I understand your fears. If I was to redo my experience I would ask to speak to the mechanic and chat with him (or her) about the job.

These aren't cheap vehicles and the diffs service is different than every other car on the market, I think you are justified to have concern and the right to speak with the mechanic about it...

I think that's the right approach. I'll try to have a friendly chat over a coffee latte with the shop foreman about my scheduled maintenance.

Do you mind showing me the screen shot of this?

I noticed over the weekend that they never reset the oil service light. I called them, after resetting it myself, to confirm they reset the diff fluid through ISTA. They responding correctly, "It would have gotten reset when you reset the oil service in the CBS."

It truly amazes me that techs/dealerships don't know how to service their own product. The exact reason I had them do the service is because I didn't want to deal with ISTA.

I will get you the screenshot later this week. From your previous post, it sounded like only the center section oil was replaced. This should not require a reset since the clutches are in the outer chambers.

Thank you, hopefully that is it.

Thanks boss, I reached out to the dealer and they said that they only did the inner chamber, just like you thought, so I guess I am in the clear here.

I swear people on this forum are more educated on their cars than the people at the dealership.

Thanks for your help!

Can you use bimmercode or something else for the reset?

The more I look at this the more confused I get. Lol.

I will be near a dealership around Christmas and might just have them do it. What ever happened to the days of pulling the drain plug and filling it up til fluid came out of the fill hole?

Here are the directions I found and the fluid I ordered:

Edit: Not sure why the photos are zoomed in, if clicked on, they should show the whole photo.
Where does this documentation comes from? I checked my vin in ISTA and there is no mention of leaving chambers 1 and 3 alone...
