Soft Close Doors

For those calm people like myself that have soft close doors how does one kindly, gently and respectfully remind others ( example significant other) not to f*****n slam the door?

I yell at everyone before they exit and watch them oh so carefully and gently close the door. The funny part is when I get out of my wife's F30 that doesn't have the soft close and end up trying to close it without much force only to having to open it again and use a little more force.

The problem here is... people are naturally "used" to slamming the car door shut. Unfortunately, you'd have to remind everyone that is has soft door mechanism and not to slam it shut.

Not sure why they're even called soft close. It's just a mechanism that pulls door shut in case you don't close it hard enough.

Mention it each time with a "robot-like" voice tone! People will eventually get annoyed and not slam the doors.

Yeah but try going back to regular doors, like when my wife gets in our other BMW and closes the door as she would on the X5, and I have to remind her to shut harder 'cause it won't do it itself!

Most annoying when people feel the need to slam the doors, and I don’t even have the “soft close” option!

Always remind the passenger upon exit not to slam the door. This makes me so angry.

I tell everyone, it's not a Chevy, you don't need to slam the doors! Doesn't help

You know what I found that works really well..... ask them not to slam the door one time. If they slam the car door a second time, let them walk.

For those of you that are gonna say I can't do that to my wife/girlfriend/boyfriend.... just open the door for them.

Just a question, but what do soft close doors really do? I have never really had trouble closing car doors and this thread seems to indicate it might be a hassle reminding people not to close the door like every other car door. Will the soft close function break if you shut it like a normal car?

You close the door like normal. And for those instances where you didn't close hard enough, the latch will close the that last half of an inch. I think it's dumb to change your habit, to close the door real light.

Automatic Soft Close system

The soft-close automatic allows you to close the doors to safely and easily without much effort or disruptive noise.

In narrow parking spaces or in positions with little space to use momentum to shut the door, you can simply let the door swing gently into the door lock. Once the door has reached the correct position (approx. 6 mm door gap), the soft-close automatic is activated via the door lock.

Then an electric motor pulls the door to completely and secures it. After successfully closing the door, the electric motor moves the lock components in the door lock automatically back into the initial position. The door can be opened and closed again at any time.

If a door was already closed manually, the electromechanical closing action is performed once for safety's sake to make sure the door is actually closed and does not simply appear to be so.
Brief component description
Door lock

Specific door locks must be installed to support the soft-close automatic function.

The door lock is fitted with a rotary striker and a locking pawl. The door lock can be unlocked mechanically or electrically and then reopened.

If the vehicle is equipped with an Automatic Soft Close system motor, the door only needs to be pressed down lightly into the door lock to close it. This starts the electric motor and the door closes fully.

The soft-close automatic is connected electrically to the corresponding door lock.

2 eight‐pin plug connection
3 six‐pin plug connection
Drive unit for soft-close automatic function in door

The Automatic Soft Close system for the vehicle doors is a stand-alone function. The only connections to the vehicle electrical system are Terminal 30B and Terminal 31 (load earth). The drive units for the Automatic Soft Close function assume operational status as soon as power is available from Terminal 30B.

The electronic circuitry for controlling and monitoring functionality is in the Automatic Soft Close system's drive motor. The sensor systems for the Automatic Soft Close system are in the door lock. The sensor system are of the hall effect sensor type. The hall effect sensors (locking pawl switch and rotary striker switch) detect the position of the rotary striker and the locking pawl.

Location data is stored in the drive motor's electronics. Thus the control system always knows what the motor position is and can operate it in order to move it to a defined position. When the motor is running, the stop conditions are checked every 23 milliseconds. If the electronic circuitry fails to detect arrival at defined positions within 5 seconds the drive motion is cancelled, i.e., the power supply to the DC motor is deactivated. After that, a change in status signalled by the hall effect sensors is sufficient to start it up again.

The driver's door Automatic Soft Close system drive motor has a repeat lock circuit to prevent the motor overheating. After activation and operation 15 times (15 increment counter), the drive motor is electrically locked out for approx. 2 minutes.

Powertrain for Automatic Soft Close system, tailgate

The electronics for controlling and monitoring the soft close function are located in the tailgate Automatic Soft Close system drive. The sensor system for the Automatic Soft Close system is located in the tailgate lock. The sensor system consists of a group of microswitches (locking pawl switch and rotary striker switch). The position of the rotary striker is recorded with the locking pawl switch (open, preclosed, closed).

The drive is connected to terminal 30B. The fuse is located in the rear power distribution box.

When the locking pawl switch is actuated by the tailgate being lightly pressed into tailgate lock (the tailgate is then in the preclosed position), the tailgate Automatic Soft Close system drive is triggered. The drive electronics initiate the tailgate lock closing action. The drive moves the rotary striker via a Bowden cable far enough for the locking pawl switch and rotary striker switch to indicate a change in status. The lock pin is then engaged in the rotary striker and secured. Activation of the drive is stopped. In order not to obstruct the opening procedure, the drive reverses and again releases the Bowden cable.

It is still always possible to close the tailgate by hand.

The tailgate Automatic Soft Close system drive has a repeat lock which prevents the drive from overheating. After activation and 10 operations (counter up to 10 increments), the drive is electrically blocked for approx. 20 seconds. The drive can then be reactivated.
