Wireless Charging Heat

I have iPhone 7 with a 3d party wireless charging case that works great with the charger that came with it at home but over heats sometimes to the point of shutting down the phone when I use it in car in the arm rest.

Wondering if this is a case or car issue? Some say it could be the case is too thick or lack of ventilation in the arm rest?

What kind of wireless charger do you use in the arm rest?
The original snap in adapter arm had a fan for cooling integrated into the back of the arm rest compartment.

It is option 6NW wireless charging a factory option. This is a charging pocket and not a cradle.

That is not F15/16.

For the F15/16 there is a pocket version and a cradle version. The cradle version has a cooling fan integrated into the rear of the arm rest storage compartment.

My 2018 has a cradle and I have noticed it warm when I pull it out.
It is a very fast charge, that might explain the heat.

Ditto here, for my 2017. Charges my Pixel pretty quick, but it's noticeably warm when it comes out.

I have a 2017 F15 (June production) with a pocket and the pic posted was to illustrate how the pocket looks and is not a picture of my vehicle. Option 6NW. I see no cooling provision. for those with cradles thanks for the reply.

If you have a pocket, your thoughts are appreciated.

I have a 2017 Jan date... my charger looks like the one in the photo. I've had a 2 & 3 hour drive & used the wireless charger with a standard case (iPhone 11). No heat issues. Wonder if it's more an issue with your wireless charging case vs the bmw design.

Its not. The problem is indeed with the BMW charger. I have the same one, and my Galaxy S8 with built-in wireless charger gets too hot and stops charging sometimes. The iphone completely shuts down . It is important to mention that this does not happen all the time, but it does happen very often with either phone. Similar issues have been reported by G30 owners so i think it is 100% on BMW this one.

I have a 17 X6 with the same charger using an Iphone XS. Also gets very hot.

I've found if I'm using an app like WAZE and the screen is on is when it's hottest. If It's just charging it doesn't seem to be an issue

After more research than expected, I finally found the following OEM charging case for iPhone 7. The picture shown is for iPhone 6 but after painful investigation, I am confident this is the right part number for iPhone 7.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-OEM-iPh...4383.l4275.c10

Has anyone used this case 84-21-2-451-555 and have they experienced excessive heat?

Thanks

Yup, working as designed.

Wireless charging is induction based energy transfer. In any induction system there is lost power whose byproduct is heat. Inexact alignment in an induction charging system increase the loss in the form of heat. In a closed glove box without proper ventilation it will be like your phone baking in an oven, even with some air flow it will still be hot. Make sure your vent hole in the glove box is open.

With phone manufacturers always competing for charging speed, not surprising some would increase the charge rates, which causes more heat. They probably have a disclaimer that the wireless charging system should be used in a closed "box".
