Several national news outlets discussing BMWs catching fire
The most disconcerting part for me was how the owners were treated by BMW management. And the fact that they did not have a remedy for this at the time and instead asked owners to park their cars outdoors?
Is this a diesel thing? Faulty service by non certified mechanics? Any more information would be appreciated. I have been a loyal BMW customer for just about 10 years now (8 BMWs) and a forum frequenter for that same period of time. I have not come across any serious member posts that would indicate this fire hazard should be a serious concern. But apparently it is. What do others think? https://www.yahoo.com/gma/mysterious...opstories.html Last edited by Falafel Combo; 02-06-2019 at 05:43 AM.. |

i had a egr cooler problem on my f15. apparently it was cracked and fuel was leaking externally. 4 months out of warranty at 46k miles the dealership had the nerve to suggest that it was not covered though there was a safety recall on that part which was known to fail. BMW refused to supply a courtesy car. Needless to say I went ballistic. In the end they repaired it free of charge not before I lost faith. Though shorly afterwards i bought another bmw (335d) to as I love the damn brand and overall i have done 230000 miles combined on my bmw's with only unscheduled trip (tow) to the dealer being the egr cooler issue(which i think should have a lifetime warranty)

From purely engineering point of view - there's only 2 major flaws that can cause fire (well actually third will be batteries overheating, like that burned down Tesla). So it's either bad ground/short circuit or hot catalytic converters starting fire (dry debris under car laying too close to cats or plastic parts of car itself).
Since cats cause issues very rarely (just don't park on dry grass or over debris), it's safe to assume 99.99% fires are started with short circuit/ bad ground etc. So final safety switch - would be to just unplug battery every-time you park in garage lol. Unplug it and sleep safely If you are too lazy to do it every time - well luckily for you there's a solution kill switch for $11: https://www.amazon.com/60Amp-Circuit...39427865&psc=1 I'm thinking I should offer this idea to BMW as a remedy and get my share of profit. I won't ask millions, I'll settle for a upcoming 2020 x5m in Brittish Racing Green color with Dark Cognac interior, thank you very much! Last edited by DuSh; 02-08-2019 at 12:22 AM.. |
