M Performance brakes versus stock on m50d
Can someone tell me if it worth changing the normal brakes for the M performace ones? I have a M50d and I feel after 5000 km that the brakes performance is below the car needs. Please let me know also some cost estimates if possible.

@cretanu , you may want to condiser aftermarket brake pad first for cheaper solution.
I personally never done a test on the F15, but the best brand would be Hawk's or Pagid Street.

Hello.
I have M50d and yesterday ordered ОЕМ M Perfomance brake system for 7000$ this is the price for assembly and disassembly, one month will arrive at me and published the photos! I personally change them because of the best braking distances and better vision. Last edited by teodorjelev; 06-21-2015 at 02:21 PM.. |

There have been a few threads about added performance and most have concluded gains are minimal. I don't think anyone has actually done back to back comparisons though.
Even for aesthetics, it not horribly expensive compared to aftermarket options. Those big rotors and calipers look amazing! |

Why do you feel they're below what the car needs?

I feel that sometimes the car is braking slower than the car in front of me...is the sentiment that I am not in full control of my car...not experienced with my prevous e70 40d...it might be also from the dunlop tyres???

Well, it's possible that some cars will out-brake you. Those cars weigh far less than 5000 lbs, though. Your X5 does not. That being said, I've discussed this with other folks in other threads. The bigger brakes won't shorten your stopping distance. The brakes you currently have could easily lock all four wheels, if the ABS would let them. The limiting factor is your tires. Try stickier/better rubber first. A better set of pads will give you more bite. The pads won't shorten stopping distance necessarily (unless you get better rubber) but they can reduce the effort required at the pedal.

cretanu nu se merita.iti spun din experienta proprie, iar daca vrei neaparat sa le schimbi, mergi pe ceva aftermarket.

After i bought the car my first thought was to change the brakes,so i called my dealer and tell him that i would like the brakes,he told me that he has one M50d with all performance parts and i should take a ride and see the difference.after 30-40 km in the city and 10 km on the highway i change my mind in giving to bmw that amound of money,in my opinion i am not a profesional driver to sense the pro s of those brakes in day by day use.my rubber is pirelli and i personaly do not think that the car brakes slow.
I will change them maybe with aftermarket if i am going to change the 20" rims with 21" from X5M. Thats my opinion. |

Would not worry about changing the brakes on a M50d, just get some Carbotech ceramic pads and paint the calipers, that's all I do and this is my second M50d.

watrob I ve read that putting ceramic pads on regular disks is not that effective and will ruin the discs in no-time. Is that true?

That's BS, have been running Carbotech brakes on all my four E70 X5's plus my new F15 and as well as my daughters BMW M-Sport sedans.

Just so you know, the optional, factory installed "doughnut" spare for the X5 50i will not fit the M Performance brakes...you will need to get the spare used on the F8x X5M/X6M.
God bless, TT |

Brakes are heat sinks, they convert momentum energy into heat. The bigger the heat sink the more momentum it can store as it dissipates prior stored momentum through cooling. What you are mostly feeling is performance of the pad, not the heat sink. For the most part BMW seems to select pads based on the lowest probability of squealing and causing owners to visit the dealer to complain their brakes are shot and incur warranty expense. So you likely have two things that are bothering you, initial bite and how much pressure you are perceiving is required to slow the car. If you max your input into the brake pedal the tires will lock, ABS will trigger. This is your max deceleration rate; tire limited, not brakes. You need to change your pads to suit your desired brake feel.
For me, I do have the BBK as I drive mountain routes. I am scrubbing momentum frequently and the bigger heat sinks do make a big difference in consistent pedal feel and lessen the chance I will end up outside of the pad's operational temp range if I've been hammering on the brakes repeatedly and get hit with an emergency stop situation. So I think, based on the stop and go traffic you reference, you would benefit from a different pad compound. |
