Stats from a long and trafficy trip from London to Chester. Would have been comfortably over 40mpg had I not got a little lead footed towards the end whilst trying to make up some time.

This isn't going to be the best by any means but I recently did a 1,520 mile trip in my 40d, with 3 passengers and myself plus bags etc averaging 53.7mph, towing a 2 tonne 12m long trailer and still getting 23.5mpg

It would have been higher than 25mpg except I had to make up a bit of time to catch the eurotunnel on the way back.

No offense to anyone here that are trying to be eco friendly or save the planet or whatever you guys are trying to achieve by getting the most mpg out of your sports SUV... but I would rather drive our X5 like it was meant to be driven... Put the shifter in m/s and in Sport+ mode... otherwise I would have gone with a prius..

My feelings entirely, don't want to burn the fuel, get a different vehicle.

Kzang it was meant to be driven in EcoPro and Sport+ They have gone to extreme lengths to make these cars as efficient and as aggressive performing as they can be. EcoPro affects everything from AC power, steering, downhill coasting, shift changes, to throttle sensitivity. Likewise, Sport+ even affects DSC. With BMW venturing into front wheel drive, producing the "i" line, and soon a 7 passenger people mover, we are likely to expect more versatility and efficiency features in all their cars, hold the M line.

You should post a Sport/Sport+ MPG for a meaningful distance. The more data points on behavior the better.

I finally got caught up and uploaded all the data into the links in Post #1.

With your more powerful car, you have my MPG beat, albeit I had a higher average speed. At any rate, by the self-declared power I have vested in myself I declare you king of the MPG, regardless of engine type.

I thought I would give it a go to calculate what my numbers are. Just came back from a 40 min drive. Highway(ish), speed limit was 90km/h with 11 roundabouts total.

I averaged 26.4mpg, I saw it jump to 29.9 as a max during the drive about 20 minutes in.

Are you using US gallons or UK? I am going to update (links, not photos in Post #1) assuming US, but will change it if you tell me otherwise. So you would be:

US 26.4 MPG
UK 31.7 MPG
8.9 L/100 km

Just thought I'd share the mileage from Orlando to Ottawa. I was quite pleased I was able to get this from our x35i.

Nicely done. I will update. Assume you were in comfort mode, and it was highway driving unless you say otherwise.

Yes that's correct. 100% of the driving was in comfort mode and I'd say 95% hwy. Also 4 passengers with luggage.

Just completed a 2000 mile road trip from Nottingham in the UK down to Monaco to watch the F1.

It must be downhill there and uphill on the way back as on the way there I got over 39mpg (imp) with an average speed of over 70mph. All in comfort mode mainly with cruise set to about 85mph indicated (82/83mph GPS).

On the way back the overall average speed dropped to about 67mph and the mpg dropped to 33mpg though there was less cruise and more slowing down/speeding up due to traffic and I have a heavy right foot not to mention the mad French drivers who pull out without looking in their mirrors first making me slow down in the first place .

I love my 40D, doing over 500 miles without stopping and so comfortable with the comfort seats up front.

I even managed to get the predicted range to go over 700 miles for the first time ever on that trip.

What kind of range have you folks experienced? Is it something like 700 miles for diesel and 400 miles for gas?

By my estimations, if that's true, and I drive 20,000 miles a year, the up charge for the diesel pays itself in the first year. Am I mistaken?

I think those are about the maximum ranges you will see, provided you fill up, go on the highway and set it to cruise at 60mph or so. Actually range, given city driving, stop and go will be lower. The diesel range will be higher due to better MPGs. In some parts of the country diesel is cheaper than regular and in other parts more expensive than premium. The math gets fuzzy.

I think in the US most people buy the diesels for their higher torque (lots of power at low RPM, quicker acceleration to 50mph), better MPG/range, better towing or mountain driving performance, but not based on fuel price breakeven.

Non taken. It wouldn't be so pointless for you though if you lived in Europe where the petrol prices are much higher than in US (approx. 1.9USD per litre in London, approx. 1.6USD per litre in Berlin). That's exactly why people in EU buy mostly diesels...

Well at least when we fill our diesels up in Germany we may enjoy the long and fast drive without looking for a petrol station every 3 hours on a highway (below picture was taken in my F11 so will still need to compare what numbers I would get in my F15 40d)
