Replace Recirculating air microfilter, Microfilter

I have a 2018 X5 xDrive35i. For the last three years, it was under warranty, and I just need to bring my car for services. Frankly, I don't know what services were performed each time. Two weeks ago, I got an email from the dealer that it is due for the following services:

Engine oil, Recirculating air microfilter, Microfilter

After the call to the dealer, I understand that "Recirculating air microfilter" is cabin air filter. "Microfilter" is engine filter.

I watched a few youtube videos about replacing filters. In this video, the technician replaced two filters easily.

Are these two filters replaced in the video both cabin air filters?

I am new to BMW. Sorry if this question too basic. Thanks for your help.

Correct, video is replacement of the cabin air filter for your 35i the correct part # 64119248294

The filter for your air intake box is either referred to as air intake filter or engine filter part # 13717571355

The recirculated air filter would be the filter thats located under your glovebox part # 64319194098

Forget amazon go to fcpeuro.com you get lifetime warranty on pretty much everything including these filters

Thanks for your detailed info about filters and fcpeuro.com. I am confused about the above two part numbers.

Is "Recirculating air microfilter" my dealer mentioned is the "recirculated air filter" you mentioned?

What filters (Recirculating air microfilter, Microfilter) did my dealer really refer to? It seems that you are talking about THREE filters in your response.

Sorry about ignorance. Thanks for your help!

So filter under the hood is 2 piece filter, check this DIY here:
https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1537290
One behind the glove box (recirculating air filter) is single piece:

Thanks for the information! I will replace the filters in both places.

Just curious: What filters (Recirculating air microfilter, Microfilter) did my dealer really refer to? It refers to cabin filter, recirculating air filter, and engine air filter? My BMW is 2018 X5 xDrive35i.

I read the store's Lifetime Warranty, but I am still not sure about how it works.
Filters are usually replaced every year or sooner. Does the store's lifetime warranty means that I need to buy a filter once, then after a year I return it and the store will send me a new one of the same filter at no cost (after refund)?

Thanks for help!

They will refund once you return the old filter.

Check your work order for the part number so you can better understand which one is replaced.

Thanks for the info! That is close to where I heard from my dealer, which is indeed too much.

I am surprised that the dealer for your info is BMW of Silver Spring. This is the dealer from which I bought my X5. Are you able to find such cost info online?

The HVAC system on many BMWs have TWO different air filters. This is in addition to the engine fresh air intake/filter and the engine oil filter.

There is the fresh air filter (course) which filters the "fresh air" coming in from the outside...and many also have a "recirculating air" microfilter which will help filter smaller dust/pollen particulate as well as filter the air that is recirculated when the fresh air flaps is closed. Depending on model...the fresh air or recirculating/recirculated air filter may also come with a choice of activated charcoal...which helps to remove odors as well as dust/pollen particulate.

You can see the fresh air filter and the recirculating air filters (#5) in the illustrations below of the "fresh air intake" & "recirculated air intake" from the f01/f02...the location of these filters may be different depending on model/engine/platform...but the basic operating principle is the same.

Based on the information from the folks in this forum, I was able to successfully install the engine filter, micro air filter, and cabin filter today.

I would like to thank everyone who helped me. You folks are AWESOME!

Because x5 is my first BMW, I was especially confused by different filters. This forum certainly helped me greatly. Best.

My favorite benefits from being a member of BMW CCA is the magazines (Roundel & BimmerLife)...and the discounts for parts & service from my local BMW dealership.

I also enjoy the hype of the annual Raffle...and the BMW CCA swag.

I don't do the events...but if you like those types of activities...they seem like they would be fun. I simply enjoy looking at the pics from some of the big events like the 4 Corners annual get-together and Ocktober-Fest etc.
