Help me with a suspension diagnosis
This evening, I got in my 2016 X5 and drove out of a parking lot. All of the sudden, small bumps in the parking lot and on the road home seemed to cause a lot of bucking from the rear end and a feeling of a much harsher ride, even allowing for the fact that I have snow tires on at the moment.
An hour before, and 2 hours before that, I was driving, and all seemed normal I parked and got out to see if there was a flat or low air. All tires looked ok. In the garage, it appears that the rear is lower than the front, as if I had something heavy in the cargo area. I have never experienced anything like this and have no idea if it is safe to drive. The nearest BMW dealer is about 45 min away and down fairly steep section of Interstate 80. Did my rear shocks go? Do they both go at the same time and the car doesn’t seem to be leaning to one side. I have done nothing but city and highway driving. No off road, no gravel roads, big pot holes or curb jumping? Any ideas? Car is out of (extended) warranty. |

If you blew your shocks out the car would bounce…. A lot on the springs. So you either broke both your springs or you have air suspension (yes I know you said you don't, but there's not to many other things it can be) and you blew the bags or the compressor. Or the extreme is you broke a arm of some sort, but you say you don't beat on the car so.
Wait…do you have run flats? |

post a picture of the car looking lower. You probably have air suspension the x5 only has it in the rear not front.

Your car has what BMW describes as rear air springs. That's the correct term: not air suspension, not rear air bags.
The compressor could be at fault but that's a separate diagnostic effort. The good news - there is a non OEM less expensive alternative: https://www.arnottindustries.com/a-2...-left-or-right |
