F85, buy or not buy?

It is currently the year 2018, I am on the fence about buying a 2016 x5M and I would like for everyone's insight on if I should buy one or not. There is one on the market for roughly 70k with under 10k miles. Garage kept serviced almost every 1500 miles.

Question is, do the X5M's really have a lot of problems after the warranty expires? I hear from a lot of close friends that they're not reliable in the long run but I feel like anything is reliable if kept well. However, to everyone and its own right? Let me know what you guys think, Im like 60% confident I want one but I need the push over the edge or the push back to reality.

I bought a 2016 with 23k miles about 3 weeks ago. Believe it or not I traded in my 2018 M3 for it. I have zero regrets and absolutely love this beast. It's incredible. My wife and kids love it. So, I'm happy with my decision, FWIW.

The manufacturer's warranty expires in 2020 on mine and I may look to extend that soon. No BMW is cheap to own after the warranty period - and this one is a twin turbo V8. I'm a little nervous but have not read about any consistent issues that arise at a certain point but I'm sure they will come up and they will cost some $$.

What was it being serviced for every 1500 miles? Lol

Also looking in an X5M forum is the wrong place to find someone to tell you jot to buy it. And as stated above. Not "a lot" of issues with the F85 "long term"

You won't regret it. I went from a 2014 M6 GC to a 2016 X5M. I thought I'd miss the M6, but I don't. Needed more space for a growing family - I could have gotten a "regular" X5 but I do love the interior of the X5M with the Mugello Red Full Merino leather - just as luxurious as the M6's interior. Also, after test driving the X5M, I was sold. Drives completely different than the X5 50i. The S63 engine is reliable. It is an M car so it will cost $ to maintain.

Yeah, I'd actually be suspicious if the M was being serviced every 1500 miles. That tells me something keeps going wrong.

FWIW, my '17 has 18k miles and has been in for service twice. Once for break-in and the second for an oil change at 10k miles. Literally nothing else.

This is my 4th X5 and I've never had any issues... it does cost little more than regular bmw since it's M cars.... I never regret and I think it's good reliable car. This is probably my last car to trade... planning on keeping this car til it falls apart lol

My 2016 has 32,000 miles and zero issues. I’ll keep it until the the new 2020 arrives in the spring/summer of 2020.

I was in the market for a x5 50i to replace my V8 4Runner. I test drove the 50i and I really liked it. But I wanted to test drive x5m before moving forward. The power and handling of the x5m was worth the extra $$. So last week I picked up '17/8k AW/BLk lease 😀. It had 16mo left on the least but I chose the buy out. This was the only AW local to me and it has warranty until 2021. It was an easy choice as I could see it before buying. Others where all out of state. Hopefully by 2021, I'll look into a G95 x5m 😁

My X5 M is approaching 50k mi with no problems except a misterious slowly raising coolant level in the charge air cooling circuit.

Service (mostly oil & once a spark plug change) is every 20k mi and oil consumption in my case is about 1 quarter every 15k mi.

At about 20k mi I switched from Pirelli on 20" to Michelin on 21" wheels due to insolvable vibration problems after renewing the Pirelli tires. I found the 21" Michelin tires roadholding much better without appreciable confort loss, but this may be quite subjective, as I mostly drive on reasonably good Central European roads.

My next car will most likely be a G95...

I bought a 50i a year ago and I was super happy with it... until last Friday when I got bored and went out to the dealership, tested drive an F86 and now I am sitting here typing and regretting my decision... whether it is buying the 50i or testing driving the M

I feel ya, we're both in the same boat. I've gotten used to the power and torque of the 50i and craving for a bit more. I've been resisting the temptation to test drive an X5M/6M.. but don't think it will last any longer!

It's based on how you drive and multiple conditions from sensors in the engine. It always adjusts based on driving. 1500 is significantly short (must be driving insane). Aggressive mixed with commuting I can see 5000-7500.

I get around 7000 miles between oil service and i'm at just over 47k miles now on my 2015 X5M.

Don't assume. Some people baby their cars. My M3s have all been low mileage use and I usually have had them serviced annually just to make sure everything is OK and have had low mileage oil changes just to keep it fresh. When cars aren't used frequently things breakdown over time. Never any issues with my M3s.
