20" Wheels (611M) vs 21" Wheels (612M) Opinions

I am curious if anyone has experience or information switching between the two different OEM wheels?

- My F85 came with the 20" OEMs. I have them removed right now with the BBS winter wheel setup I purchased from tirerack...really happy with this winter setup (BBS SX and Blizzak DM-V2) by the way. The 611M only have 6k miles on them with the stock Pirelli P Zeros.

Two options I am thinking about:
1) Finding a set of the 612M wheels and mount some Michelin PSS
2) Drop down a width (275/315 vs 285/325 Stock) on the 611Ms and run PS4S


Feedback or opinions are appreciated.

Also, what does everyone think the 611Ms with the Pirellies are worth, 6k miles on them and in perfect (like new condition)?

I too would also like to know the answer to this as I am considering the same given that tyre choices are limited on the 611 as I can only get Pirreli or Conti's.

After a few days and more research, I am leaning towards dropping down a size to 275/315 (front/rear) and going to a Michelin PS4. Unless someone provides some advice on other options or dropped a size width of 10mm is a poor route. Thoughts?

I currently have the 611s for winter and the 612s for summer. I ran 275/315 on 611s on my 2016. No issues.

I'm currently running winters on 551 rims which are 275/315 which are performing fine, but the rim was designed for this size. Will 275/315 be okay on the wider 611 rims?

I've run both. I have 612s for summer with PSS and 611s for winter with Scorpions. I previously did have 611 for summers with the PZeros. PZeros are expensive and the only option for that rim, which was one of the motivating factors for switching. At least with the 612s you have a few more tire options. Most feel the PSS is a better tire. Many people go down on the 611 to put all-seasons on and avoid the rim swap and have no issues. Before going down a size make sure if passes muster with your car state inspection; that wasn't an option for me in PA to go down a size because its below manufacture minimum spec and that "won't/shouldn't" pass annual PA inspection, going up in size is usually never a problem. I say "won't/shouldn't" because it's a liability for the dealer/shop that does your inspection if they knowingly pass you against state or manufacturer recommendations/minimums.

If I remember correctly winter 611 rims are more narrow in the rear than standard 611s.

My current 611s are the winter set up. The 611s on my 2016 were the staggered set up.

Maybe a stupid question.

I just purchased 612m with tires from another member. I have the 611m and currently getting new tires on them. This will be my first situation having a winter and summer set.

So you guys running two sets of rims and tires, do you just reset the TPMS when you switch sets and the vehicle picks up the signal or do you have to program to the vehicle another way? Thanks

Once wheels are on the car just reset via on board computer and you should be fine as long as your TPMS is good.

Don't fall for the BS that shops will tell you if someone try's to charge you because "they had to plug the computer up to reset / clear" smh.

Thanks for the info. That was the way I was hoping it would work.

Also, what about alignment. I was told by my service adviser that I should have this done when changing wheel sizes.

I can think of no reasons why changing wheel size will have an effect on alignment. If your alignment is off, your new tires will be subject to premature/irregular wear (but so will your old tires). Based on this & TPMS, it may be time to find a new SA.

If you're worried about it, though, I'll buy the 612m's off of you before you mount and start liking them.

Its recommended in general to do alignment when changing tires (read putting new tires on), so often it gets translated into do an alignment when changing any tires (including switching from summer to winter). I usually plan for an alignment once a year, usually when I have my summers on. Sure it may be unnecessary, but a good alignment helps to prolong tire life by reducing uneven wear. Of course if you feel anything out of whack or the car is pulling you should get the alignment checked out.

I just burned through a brand new set of Pirelli Scorpion winter tires in one season. The only thing I can think of this that they didn't check alignment after going from my summer 21" to winter 20". Not happy about it. With that being said, have any of you put Toyo GSi5 winters on ? Thoughts?

Oh man sorry to hear one season. Ouch. I am on season 2 with my F86 and they look maybe half gone. And I drive hard.

Perhaps you drive them when temps too warm and wear was accelerated?

I'll be ordering a set of the MPS4S for my style 611 wheels as soon as I kill the remaining Pirellis. Having run both on a Porsche I can say the Michelin's are an all around improvement - and if you didn't notice save you up to 7 lbs per corner!

What tire sizes are you going with? 315 and 275 (rear to front)

Running 295 F and 325 Rear - slight change in rolling radius, one error message then the computer figured it out

Tires run smoother, handle bumps better, and are significantly lighter. Only downside I can find is likelihood of stone chips from aggressive offsets and wider fronts

I just got custom BC Forged wheels tailored to best fit 275/40/21 in front and 315/35/21 in the rear. I’m going to first run Pirelli P Zero as they had a close out on Tire Rack and I took advantage. But best part Michelin PS4 SUV tire will be coming shortly, spoke with Michelin rep. No exact dates unfortunately, but soon. Anyway, main reason why I did this I have the stock 20” wheels and DWS06 275/315 combo and the ride is awesome. So I wanted to upsize to 21” for aesthetics, personal preference, but I really didn’t want it sacrifice ride. You’ll see a few posts discussing this on the forums, and hopefully my wheels come soon so I can share it with you guys.

I bought my F85 with 20" rims and PZeros. I renewed the tyres at some 20.000 mi but could not balance them properly (runout deformation).

Pirelli replaced them with a new set after their expert checked the rims and found them ok.

The new set of PZeros suffered the same problem. Pirelli took them back and reimbursed their cost.

The BMW SA gave me a good deal on a 21" set with Michelins. Subjectively, I found them vastly better in roadholding and as confortable as the 20" Pirellis.

I also have a separate 20" set of winter Pirelli Scorpions, very good tyres. When I switch them every winter, I reset the tyre sensors and it takes some 2 miles to read again the pressure.

I upgraded to forged 21s from OEM 20s, and used a better tire along with that lighter rim to in my opinion actually improve ride. I find the MPS4s ride somewhat softer than others.
