2017 F15 x5 3.0 - Starter/Ignition Malfunction

Neighbour broke down in the street today 100m from his house. Vehicle out of warranty at 176,000Km.

Vehicle is left outside - not garaged. Temp cold and windy!

Said he had problems backing out driveway, vehicle lurched a bit.

He said he has not had any battery related warnings.

Lifting the hood, I smelt a bit of burning smell.

On trying to start the vehicle, I heard nothing...ignition did activate.

Tried to boost...managed to hear some starter click and after a few minutes tried to turn over, only for a second past the engaging.

Ran a scan with the Foxwell, no codes given. But did notice a warning on the head-unit, not seen previously - 'Starter/Ignition Malfunction'.

I was thinking battery or alternator is toast, but on the tester managed a reading, 12.7v - 1000 cranking amps. Pretty certain battery is original. I was of a mind to throw in a new fully charged battery....

Vehicle has been picked up...

Anyone care to offer anything....

Thanks...BF

Why isn't your neighbor taking the car to the dealer considering its a 17' should still be under warranty beats waiting for replys all day that are probably just assumptions anyway. From my experience if its a starter/ignition thing with a BMW its likely to do with the stop n go function being faulty but thats just my guess

Edit: Nevermind I just noticed you said its out of warranty

@Bilbofraggins I have the same issue. Should I just go for the new battery? Or need to change anything else. Do you remember? Appreciate the help
