I agree. I recently had new front & rear brakes installed by the dealer under the maintenance plan. I'd like to swap the pads as as soon as possible before the new rotors see much wear. Might end up going with the Hawk Ceramic or HPS 5.0.

The M5 Z23 PowerStop front pads are the other option. I'd prefer not to use a smaller pad that doesn't cover the entire rotor surface. Maybe the difference is minimal given the lost friction area is on the inner radius of the rotor, but I gotta think the BMW engineers used the larger rotors & pads for a reason, right? Heavier vehicle, more stopping power / fade resistance. I just wish I knew what the trade off was so I could make an informed decision. I suspect it's fine for a street driven vehicle that's not tracked and rarely driven at the limits of braking. Maybe the balance is affected a little?

In the end it would just be nice if PowerStop would start producing the front Z23 pad and we could close this thread.

I emailed PowerStop as well. I encourage others to do this too, can't hurt!

The email address is customerservice at powerstop dot com.

Should have waited to send that last post. Here is the latest from the product manager:

"We had some delays on these pads but they’re now in production. I expect us to receive the first shipment of the Z23 pads by end of May."

We will see, won't we.

Good man. I'll bombard them with inquiries as well. But, why aren't we pushing for the "more powerful" Z26 muscle car pads.Do they not know we have 200mph on the dash? 😂😂😂😂

I suppose I would prefer the Z26 pad over the Z23 but beggars can't be choosers. Sad that I have to refer to myself as a beggar even though I am a willing and paying customer but it is what it is I suppose. The brake compound is the same so that makes me feel as though the Z26 wouldn't be a huge improvement over the Z23. What do I know though?

Nice! Now to see if my front pads will last to then, I have been holding off till the sensor trips hoping the correct fitment comes down the pipeline but was going to commit to the M5 pads if not.

Now if the sensor trips tomorrow I suppose I may slap a set of Z16 series on the old rotors just to get by, dunno, hopefully a moot point in a few months.

I have a used set of OEM front and rear pads if you get desperate. I switched to the Hawk ceramic, got tired of waiting on PowerStop.

Which Hawk Ceramics did you get? Did you replace the rotors at the same time? Did you buy direct or somewhere else? I appreciate your input!

Hawk Performance Ceramic - HB630Z.626 and HB835Z.726
Found them on amazon
my rotors were in good shape so I was able to keep and reuse, the rear pads and rotors had been replaced a few months prior and the front pads were close (but not needed) to change so that's when I made the move. I was having tire work done so just had them do the work at the same time.

Nice! I'm willing to give up some bite to reduce brake dust and squeal. Thanks again for the input!

So after lots of research (including this thread), I have opted for these EBC Yellowstuff pads with a new set of OEM rotors/discs.

Options for the F85 X5M are limited in Australia and stock is almost non existent. My only other options were to have rotors/discs made and the use of OEM pads which as we all know dust up quite badly.

Total cost is $1,760AUD and a couple hours of my time to remove the old and fit the new when everything arrives in a few weeks. My local BMW dealer wanted $3K AUD.

Link for the Yellowstuff pads here. Thanks to Darrell from Empowered Auto Parts for trying to find me options and finally getting me the pads when no-one else could. Great customer service and quick replies to emails.

OEM Rotors/discs were purchased from eBay from bandw_parts who were also pretty helpful with quick email turnaround times.

Way to much $ for pads. And that's not being cheap.

Well my day has come. Brake light came on last night. Checked my calipers with a gauge and they came in at 34mm. So. I already have a new set Z23 CC M5 pads I had laying around from last summer I never got to install. And I'm gonna practice what I preach and order a good full rotor set from FCPeuro and either akebono or Z26 rear pads. Sucks, but hey, what are we gonna do.

One step closer. Finally have an official part number and listing of front Z23 pads specifically for F85/86 on the PowerStop website. Now all we need is availability. Part # Z23-1738

LMK if you find a place selling them because I've struck out searching. Dropped an email to PowerStop asking where to buy, but no response.

Will do. Being that it's up, it should be available within weeks.

Yes, in fact that's what I bought for now and they should arrive this week.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I read good things about these pads as well, so we'll see.

BTW - I ordered BMW Genuine rotors ($309/each):
https://www.bmwpartspros.com/v-2017-...--front-brakes
4-11-2-284-901
4-11-2-284-902

My local dealership quoted me $1345.30 (for rotors only) plus any shipping charges depending on where they are going.

Buy from FCP Euro! Buy them once and never have to buy a pair again.
