x5 40e performance mods...anything out there?

Hey Guys
coming out of a pretty modded 435GC, I got the x5 40e due to the crazy lease specials....The 4 banger is ridiculous, yeah I get it, its a hybrid but i'm looking for a bit more juice. Not trying to go crazy, maybe jb+, jb4? has anyone done anything?

sorry to go off topic, but do you mind sharing what the lease deals were?

I'm considering a used 50i but could be swayed by a decent lease on the X5 and an e90 m3.

Thanks

Just out of curiosity did you end up tuning your 40e? If so, would love to hear what you've done and how it ended up.

There was someone who listed a nice tuning option for the 40e. Got almost 400hp.

Anybody use that tune or found any other options for tunes or hard parts?

It's been a while, but I contacted Racechip USA and they said that they don't offer anything for the xdrive40e

I just emailed autotecknic just in case to see what they say and will update when I hear back.

Did they say it would work on the 40e? Just curious as it has to play nice with the electric motor in the trans and didn't know if the programming was designed for it. I know the motor itself it could work but didn't see anything on their website saying 40e compatible.

The other offerings seemed to work with the engine and electric drivetrain and figured it had to be a system like that to make most of the hybrid drive.

But let us know how it goes. . Curious of your findings.

I asked specifically. They said about the 40e's hybrid setup:

The car picks up really well, especially on the hybrid making up for the lag, even though there isn't much of it. The hybrids don't affect it at all. The JB4's work great on the 6 cyl N55 hybrids as well.

Let us know how it goes!

Very cool, please let us know how it works on your 40e.

I feel that all the other solutions for the N20 would work also (since it just bumps up the psi a bit), but really apprehensive when those companies say no, lol.

Definitely let us know how it works out! I’d love to order one of these for mine!

The parts came in and they look fantastic. The wiring is well made and the aluminum housing is really well machined. I got the kit with the Bluetooth wireless control.

I started looking at installation. I've got to figure out the single wire that needs to enter the cockpit and connect to the OBD port, as I don't see an obvious way through the firewall next to the brake booster due to the 40e charging connection.

Pics of parts to come tomorrow, and perhaps of installation if other commitments can be managed.

Parts Arrived

I got the Bluetooth cable and JB4 unit, the plastic weatherproof box (not necessary), and the badge for the back.

The wiring is very nice quality but you also find the wiring for a pneumatic waste solenoid is present that you will need to tie out of the way - not needed. Would be nicer without it.

The JB4 kit comes in a well-machined aluminum housing. It does have a rubber seal so there's no real advantage to the plastic housing other than it's lighter. Given these PEHVs weigh a ton, that's of no real concern. Skip the plastic box.

The first challenge I ran into was the OBD cable. I couldn't find an obvious way through the firewall, so I reached out to Burger and asked for ideas. They recommended the door jamb and that worked well, though not perfectly clean - you see the wire with the door open. It runs up inside the quarter panel corner and into the space where the brake booster sits.

The next challenge is there was similarly no obvious way to get wires from the engine bay where the harness connects to the sensors. I removed the plastic cover and gently reinstalled it with the wire running between it and the big rubber mounding piece.

I had a spare bendable hydraulic fluid reservoir bracket from the motorcycle world in my tool box. I used this an existing torx head bolt to create a secure mounting point. An adhesive backed foam pad to the back of the unit, and the available open mount holes and a few zip ties and I was in business: unit zip tied to the bendable reservoir mount, and the Bluetooth wire kit zip tied to the other side of the unit.

All wires plugged in and I was good to go.

Mounted Unit

Here's the unit mounted. I apologize for not taking pics with everything exposed, it dawned on me too late.
