Transmission Question - Neutral 'Feel'

I have a question about what others have experienced with the feel/behavior of their transmission.

1) When shifting from Park to Drive/Reverse the transmission does not feel like it engages until I slightly move the accelerator pedal.

2) When shifting from neutral to Drive/Reverse the transmission does not feel like it engages until I slightly move the accelerator pedal.

3) When coming to a complete stop, while still in drive/reverse, as I move my right foot from the brake to the accelerator again the transmission does not feel like it is engaged (in gear) until I slightly move the accelerator.

The best way I would describe it is that the transmission appears to be in neutral (even though selected in drive or reverse) until the accelerator is pressed. I can even get the vehicle, if started on an incline, to roll the the opposite direction of the gear selected (i.e., if in drive will roll backwards).

Any comments or additional sharing of information would be appreciated. I am not overly concerned, but just an odd experience.

All of that sounds about correct lol.. it's basically like your driving stick / DCT that's why so many people believe the F85/F86 is DCT.

Btw if you don't want it to rollback just select "auto hold" and you should be good to go.

It's actually a huge annoyance of mine. M's should be authentic and this fake DCT bullshit is far from it. I wish it had a DCT but since it doesn't, don't try to fake it.

Rant over. Sorry folks

Tranny is programmed to "act" like a DCT. I don't know if I like it or not, but it is weird.

Apparently they wanted it to look and feel like sitting in an M vehicle, that family feel with the gear shifter and the same drive. The ZF 8 speed is an amazing box but I hate the way it's setup as getting out of the garage on cold start is lively to say the least. I'm a huge auto fan and I find the M2C dct more delicate on take off than the X5 which shouldn't be.

I would have preferred a traditional auto setup where it rolls with your foot off the brake. I think it's easier to build an auto to take the huge torque reliably which is why auto are taking over and the shift times are now comparable to a dct

Thanks for all the feedback, I appreciate it.

Like others have said, I am fine with it and think overall it is a great transmission. One of the best autos I have ever experienced.

Thanks again.

Having owned an E92DCT competition, as well as an F15x5 5.0, and now the F85 I have to say I prefer this. It gives me 90% the experience of a DCT without the complexity and worry should something go wrong. If I had to guess, repairing this vs an actual DCT which could handle this amount of hp/tq seems like the way to go?

I would say the auto box would be more expensive than the manual to repair but you would be unlucky to damage an auto but then the manuals are tough too. I have been told that 40k filter change along with 6litres of oil are the best maintenance for the auto box

I am not a fan of the Faux DCT either.
Great gearbox in terms performance though.

I really wish there was a way to select "park" with the vehicle running with out opening the door with the seat belt unlatched. I use the park brake button. But it you touch the gas it will turn the park brake off. I was having a nap in the car the other day and half a sleep my foot touched the gas and I woke up with the car rolling...

If that’s how DCT gearboxes feel like, I’m glad I’ve stuck with manual cars all this time. The seemingly nothing and then lurching forward or dropping into neutral while trying to inch up while parallel parking really sucks.

As for your situation, does touching the gas override the parking brake? I guess having driven a manual for the past 20+ years, it’s just second nature for me to engage a parking brake of sorts.

Pretty sure it doesn't override the parking brake unless it's auto hold not parking brake. I find the m2 dct amazingly manoeuvrable for a clutchless manual. Much better than the first 1999 msg e36 m3 I had, that was awful.

The auto once moving is awesome it's just the way they have set it up almost too clever for there own good!

My experience is that when I put on the parking brake and leave in drive or reverse that once the gas pedal is pressed it will release the park brake. Not the same as auto hold which is more smooth. Park brake release has a slight delay.

Anything is better than the 958 cayenne tranny. It ruined the entire experience. That’s why I traded it for my soon to be delivered 2017 x5m

Does everyone else’s F85 or F86 always tended to shift from gear 1 to gear 2 at 2000rpm? I found it’s kind of jerky when the temperature is cold and if you don’t give it enough gas it’s really unsmooth.

I thinks the fake DCT thing is cool. It sets the M apart from all the other X5 out there. I keep my auto hold off, and it makes me smile every time I pull out of my garage and it rolls backwards while I wait for traffic to clear. I really feel like a 40 year old child with this car.
