I agree with you, morally, dealerships should tell customers of this, and similar issues, but it's unrealistic to expect them to point out a huge flaw(s) in their product, when trying to get someone to pay them $100k+ for it. BMW is aware of these issues, and that's why they usually offer to fix it, if/when a customer complains about it. It is surprising, though, that BMW will add PPF to some of their vehicles from the factory, and not others. The M/M Sport version of their X5 warrants having it from the factory as much as the M4 does.

I, like you, had an E70 M repaired by BMW. They only agreed to repair it if I would sign a contract saying I'd pay to cover the repaired areas in PPF. I agreed, but it was one of the BMWs we owned for the shortest period of time, 3 months. We replaced it with the diesel E70 with sport package and running boards, which prevented rock chip damages. The E70, to me, was worse than the F15/F85 with "sandblasting." On the E70 it was so bad, the PPF would be shredded to bits in no time. On the F85, it's been a year for me, almost, and the PPF is still undamaged. I checked it when I went out earlier today.

Fortunately, there are forums like this, where people like us, aren't afraid to tell the dirty gritty truth about all the good and bad related to the vehicles we own. Over the years, I've found various car forums to be a goldmine in helping resolve issues large, and small. It's a shame the OP didn't find this out sooner.

Yeah.. my service advisor asked me to swing by. His manager to pictures of it and said he would get back to me. The last time he had a request like this the answer was no... but he said he would see what he can do. In the mean time the mud guards will go in tomorrow. I did get a price on putting Xpel on the rockers and door bottoms. With the mud guards in I think that will stop most of the damage moving forward. I will wait see what BMW does first before putting Xpel.. would be such a waste I put it on and then they said they will repaint..

Do you think Xpel will mask it or will it show through.

Kzang .. agreed. considering the X5M costs considerably more. A sheets of plastic film would have increased the cost by $10? Our family has had 17 BMWs since 2009.. yes quite a number. We have never had issues like this in all previous models except this one, the most expensive one. I checked my wife's M4 today in the front area where my X5M is having the issue, and hers was perfectly fine.

I did get a price already, $350. This is for the rockers and the bottom of the front and back doors. The Xpel dealer said they would take the mud flaps off for me before they get it installed. I need to get the mud flaps on to stop more damage while I wait an answer from BMW about the paint.

I think the damage will show through the Xpel film, it won't mask it. If you can, have BMW repaint it then apply the Xpel. The paint will have to cure; you can't apply the film until the paint is fully cured.

By no means am I saying this is the fix all for what you all are describing but here is a solution.

Clean the rockers very well and then use a crayon to literally fill in the rock chips. Take your time and they will hardly be noticeable. Then apply the Xpel over the rocker panels with the crayon wax.

When I bought my corvette the Xpel installer showed this to me on a couple places and I was amazed!

Dealer had the mud flaps installed today. I must say i was expecting it to look real hideous, but not too bad. They are awaiting an answer from BMW NA about the repaint. They said if given the go ahead they will remove the guards again to repaint. Since the guards are secured by double sided tape and screws they would have to put new tape on. This could have all been avoided if BMW was upfront with it's customers.

My wife's M4 BMW installed a clear bra in problem areas as part of the delivery. Should they not have done so on the F85?

I saw xcfloyd had installed some mud flaps. I ordered some in the meantime. I hope it looks good with Donnington Gray.

They actually don't look too bad. They will surely help with the rocks getting kicked up. Hopefully BMW will step up and repaint.

I wouldn't repaint. Destroys resale value.

I hope so too. The service advisor was pretty confident they would given the fact we got 2 Ms in one month, plus having done 17 units since 2009... his manager should be able to put a compelling case together.

It won't destroy the resale value. No one will even know it was repainted if there is PPF on top of it. The paint work will be documented by BMW. I had the rockers on my E70 X5-M Sport repainted by BMW, which BMW NA paid for, and it didn't hurt the resale value of my car at all.

For anything that is plastic sure you can go ahead and repaint. The issue is the metal panels such as the lower doors. In order to fix this it would require a repainting of both doors and possibly the rear quarter to blend the paint. Another issue with the film is that you have to wait 90 days for the paint to cure to put the film. Any Used car manager with a paint meter will know it was repainted.

Like I said before, BMW repainted the rockers on my E70 X5 due to the stones "sandblasting" the rockers. It was covered with PPF and BMW knew all about it. It didn't hurt my trade in value at all. In fact, I think it helped it because the rockers looked brand new, and not sandblasted.

I'm pretty sure awesoM (the OP) indicated he was going to cover any panels that were painted with PPF. That's why I said it wouldn't hurt his resale value.

It's on all 4 doors.. so they would have to paint all of them. This is a lease, unless I can get "reasonable" extended warranty options I am unlikely going to keep it. Will likely get another one, possibly the X3 M if it ever comes to fruition. I always thought I needed an X5 for space reasons, this past year I was in an X3, admittedly I had capacity anxiety for the first couple of months, but once I got use to how nimble it was it just started to grow on me. Of course there is no M SAV other than the X5, which is leads me to this forum now

Perhaps I should start a new thread, I am curious how much extended warranty is.

Is it just me, or do the mudflaps actually look ok?

Any chance we can get a picture from behind? (sorry for all the requests)

no, they look OK to me too. And I bet they'd look good on my black sapphire... wonder if I just shouldn't get 'em. More pics would be appreciated!
