Cated or Catless DPs
Hi Guys and Gals,
Anybody that is running DPs, which ones do you prefer, cated or catless? Also, do you have any fumes or smells inside the cabine? I'm about to install the Dinantronics, if I want to intall DPs later on, is there a way of turning the CEL off? I know that the Dinantronics will not do that, but is there a stand alone part that I can use to do this in conjuction with the Dinan. Thank you. Eric

IMHO, down pipes are a sound mod. I’ve not tested BMW, but have tested 650hp GM engines and removing stock cats gained less than 10rwhp. Ride will sound better and the turbo sound is more pronounced and will make you think it is much faster. Go for it if you like the sound first and a few ponies. You will smell fumes outside and possibly inside at drive throughs.
Flash tune is the only dependable way to eliminate the cel. |

I've heard on M5/6 and one other X5M that had catted DPs and still threw a CEL down the road. I'm planning on eventually going catless for this reason, fumes will be marginal but definitely will be there.
In terms of power, you'll gain a little with just the DP but this has to be in conjunction with a real tune (not dinantronics) to take full advantage. |

I have catless down pipes with my akrapovic exhaust. Going catless you will definitely get a CEL with out a tune to delete it. The sound with a catless is a very loud in sport or sport plus but in efficient you can keep the exhaust very tame when driving conservatively. In regards to the fumes, in efficient you can hardly smell anything from the inside with windows down. In sport and sport plus it is noticeable but is actually not that bad and doesn’t bother me compared to my catless v10 M6. I haven’t dynoed it yet as I’m waiting to do it around the same temperature as my previous dyno to have a better comparison in June but the power did feel noticeably stronger.

I am using 400cel DPs. No delete necessery. Better Turbo Sound with my akra and not so loud that isnt it possible for daily driving.
Next step i will do an OBD Tune to 700 hp and thats it. Someone told me that it could be possible with 750 hp but i dont want to overtune and have later problems with maybe the engine. |

I have catless DP and exhaust from FI Exhausts. Really enjoy the sound of the turbo, especially under light acceleration. Exhaust has remote control to be open or closed at your decision. I only smell it at start up or under ground parking. I think of it like steak. Do you actually enjoy the smell of steak? If not, do you stop eating it. Performance and sound fully outweigh any drawback for me. And I have never removed DPs before on any other vehicle. Had to get a tuner to take out the CEL. Actually if I were to do it again, my mechanic said it is so easy to change the Turbos at the same time. Should have done that and buy 1 tune instead of 2.
