OBD tool recommendations

I’m getting ready to replace my 8+ years old battery, would need to buy a OBD tool just for registration.
Anyone have a good recommendation for affordable tool ?
I have BimmerCode but it does not do battery registration.
Thanks in advance for any info.

You can use bimmerlink since you already got bimmercode.

Ditto...just download the Bimmerlink app and use the same OBD dongle you use for the Bimmercode. Here's a direct link to the Bimmerlink app website: https://bimmerlink.app/

If you change the type of battery (like from AGM to wet cell or the AH rating from 92AH to 105AH or vice versa)..then you will need to "CODE" that change in Bimmercode...then "REGISTER" the new battery using Bimmerlink.

If the type and/or AH rating is basically the same...then all you will need to do is register the battery using Bimmerlink.

Here's some screen shots below:

  • bottom pic = battery coding screenshot using Bimmercode app

Agree with Red_Y_ and Qsilver7 input, but also throwing Foxwell NT530 or above in the mix. It has paid for itself over and over for me.

- Read Codes
- Clear Codes
- Live Data
- Register Battery (Main and Aux)
- Transfer Case adjustments
- Fuel Filter Priming

Thanks to all. Appreciate the very good info.
Got it changed to same battery capacity and used Bimmerlink.
Btw, BMW brand replacement battery does not come with vent hole plug for unused hole and old plug woul not come out of old battery. I had to use trim snaps to plug the unused hole.
I even asked dealer parts person and was told new ones don’t have plugs, weird.

Too bad about the situation with your local BMW dealership's part dept. When I picked up a new battery for my f06 in Jan/2023...it had a little plastic baggy adhered to the side of the battery that contained both a new little black elbow and the extra plug to insert into the other side. Guess I got lucky and no one pulled it off before I purchased the battery. I didn't think to take a pic of those two things until I had already plugged the negative side and hooked up the vent tube to the positive side.

Does the NT530 work for battery coding/registration on the X5 F15?
I don’t it shown here? https://www.bimmerworld.com/Tools/Fa...BoCMNAQAvD_BwE

Yes, you can register main and aux as well as change battery capacity should you chose to up size.
