Examining the F85 X5M: the air intake system
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Many of you have already watched IND’s acquisition of our X5M, as well as our initial dyno testing of the incredible new Super SUV, found in the links below. In addition to product testing and development, our IND company cars serve a second interesting function: they enable us at IND to disassemble, inspect, and study these cars so that our clients don’t have to. Over the coming months we will periodically release images and descriptions of this amazing M truck’s systems, giving BimmerPost members a look into the inner workings on their X5M and X6M vehicles. We’ll start at the front of the car, with the air intake system. http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1111936 http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1113734 As with most modern BMW M cars, BMW has created a stellar intake system to feed the new S63B44B engine. The new airbox directly feeds the turbos with air that is drawn from the very front of the car. The airbox is specifically sized from BMW to generate a pleasing sound, and is likely also designed to take advantage of low inlet temperatures. We removed the factory airbox lid, expecting to find air filters with built in charcoal sub-filters. Removing these items (for off road use) is a common modification performed by many M car owners, and will net a few extra horsepower at no expense. What we found instead were generously sized air filters with no charcoal sub-filters in sight! Although we at IND are tinkerers by nature, we have found that the original BMW intake system is a beautifully designed group of parts! In the coming weeks, we’ll have a look at some other sub-systems of the IND X5M, and inspect some of the components that our clients typically choose to modify. We hope you enjoy our more in-depth look at this amazing Super SUV!

From the looks of these filters, they are allowing air in from 4 of the six sides with 1 side being used for the intake. Impressive

Very impressive, but I wonder why they are still situated in the hot part of the engine compartment. Why not create true cold air intake systems somewhere in the bumper? Maybe I am missing something and technology somehow converts the hot air into cold air....

Seems like BMW always does a great job with its intake systems. That's one area where modifications aren't necessary.

Very good decision by BMW to make the engine be Hot vee back in '08. This eliminated turbo lag before it was introduced in the BMW lineup. Now Audi and AMG have their own hot vee engines... I hope the next engine wont be a 4.0 liter V8 like the Audi and AMG, otherwise the engine choice is boring. I really hope BMW slaps in a 3.5 twin turbo V10 or something mad like that

Though nobody has eliminated turbo lag.

If your talking about having the actual filters outside if the engine compartment the you would have more plumbing and bends which would be more of a detriment. You would still have heat soak on any pipe in the engine comparent. Plus there are intercoolers. Having 20 degree cooler air as it is compressed and running past 1500 degree turbos will notake much of a difference. |

It's close enough. The throttle might not as responsive as it was with the NA cars, but there is definitely no turbo lag. Maybe a slightly softer throttle, but if you are talking about lag, then I highly doubt it.

I guess no one will attempt to make an intake for the X5m. At least carbon fiber covers on OEM box? Coming from an F80, the X5m engine bay needs carbon fiber.
