Front fender extension?

Hi,

Been lurking since ordering my X5 50i M Sport, which I took delivery a couple of weeks ago. A week after, it went to the dealer to get the MPBK installed.

I just noticed last night that the front fender has very small, short plastic extension. I don't remember seeing it, and I haven't found a picture where this plastic piece exists. Until now... as I'm typing this, I noticed the fender in the banner up top appears to have that plastic piece. It's not the wheel arch extension kit (51-77-0-421-056). Has it always been there? Did come with the MBPK or the dealer did something when they installed?

I'll take some pictures when I get home tonight if it's not clear what I'm talking about.

The part# you posted is for previous generation X5 E70/71.

Just to be clear - there are fender flairs (that can be painted to match body color or left black plastic) for f15. There are also extra extensions on top of fender flairs.

And then there is an extra lip added to fender flairs to extend them even more. I can't find pictures of that one, but if anyone stumbles upon them - please post it. I'm looking to add them.

D'oh! Was so caught up with what it looks like that I missed it was for E70/71.

Yeah definitely not fender flares, but I am wondering if this is the lip you're talking about now.

Here's the part in question:

Yes! Thanks you for finding it! That's the one - you need to have fender flairs already and then it goes on top of it (or under it to be precise).
Very rare! I think I found part number 51162339010 - still not sure where to get them in US. They look very good if you have aggressive staggered setup.

Interesting. I've never seen anyone me with these. Thanks for sharing

Would they come preinstalled from factory? Because like I said earlier, I really do not remember seeing them before the MPBK install. Plus, if the dealer just gave them to me, I'm now missing the rears... only the fronts are installed.

I think I've read somewhere that they are for Japanese/Chinese market only. The guy who wrote it also had only front ones installed. I think the only way to get them is to buy a complete set of 4. I saw them somewhere for about $330 in US, but I don't remember where. It's probably expensive, but I never saw them in person and I'm not sure how they look. In photos they look like they add a bit of "wide body" appeal so to speak. I also have unpainted black plastic fender flairs so they will match.

Well crap then. I'm missing the rears, and against my painted fender flares, they look like the inner fender liner isn't sitting right. But thanks for letting me know what they are.

You can take them off and just leave fender flairs - in worst case scenario.

Exactly: worst case scenario. Because now you have me thinking I need the rears.

Might be better off leaving them and adding the rears. I bet it reduces rock chips.

Well it's oem So don't blame the messenger, blame bmw. I personally think that when the color matches like black on black - they are a plus if you have an aggressive setup. For stock skinny tires it's not going to look good. It's not for everyone.

Sorry I wasn't directing it to anyone, I just think it looks like an afterthought addition to make the car look horrible.. It reminds me of people who add those window reflectors on nice cars....

Ironically or not, they usually are an afterthought. Ive seen a few reviews of special editions cars (AMG's black series for example) and it stated that in some countries it is mandatory that the wheels don't stick out. So if the fender flares that usually come with that specific model are too small for that "ultra special" setup, they add this plastic extensions. I know USA is one of the countries (i've seen this in several Doug De Muro clips) but maybe the laws are more rigid in other parts of the world, as you say Japan for example.

L.E: Min 4:40 is an example i saw recently:

They look like something that you'd find on a 1/2 ton pickup truck. I would definitely take them off.

It is usually included when an X5 comes with the 21" M Performance wheels as I've seen in dealerships.
