I like my Pirelli Scorpion R/F tires - is the Conti DWS that much better?

Hi,

I am about to replace my OEM Pirelli run flats on my 2015 X5d. It seems universal here that the Conti DWS is a great replacement, but I actually think the Pirelli Scorpions have been a good tire. I have 45K on them, and about 5k of tread left, although I don't want to go through another winter with them. The ride is still very good and they have low noise. So my questions is, why would I want to give up the safety of run flat, unless there is a significant advantage to the non run falt contis? Let's hear some feedback as I might be way off base with this.

It's covered plenty why people make the switch. They're cheaper, way more comfortable, and make less noise. But that's it when it comes to a tire. Surprising you got 45k miles out of your RFT though. You must have a 35i?

You’ll want to get the spare tire kit if you run the conti’s. I run the 20” staggered setup in the winter and they are great. Wife’s X5 has the same scorpion verde 19” you are running and they are great also. I’d prob stick with the scorpions as you will have to turn it in with RFT.

I have 48k on my Pirellis with at least 5k left, too. Am pondering the same choice. I haven’t rotated my wheels. Mine is the diesel and I have done a bit of towing. I never expected to get the mileage I have on these tires. I have the spare tire, haven’t needed it, yet.

Will be interesting to see others experience.

I had the OEM Michelins on my xDrive 35i. I thought they were a good tire but the Conti DWS is much better. Better ride, better handling, and better winter/snow traction. If you have a spare tire in the vehicle, I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade.

from my exp, DWS was only good for 20-25k miles and then, it gets loud and the characteristic of tire changes drastically

Dws are the greatest tire ever invented.... how can you say anything bad about them.....

Track, rain, shine, snow and ice they can do it all...

They are without a doubt more comfortable than the run flats and for me a big factor in deciding to opt for them was the snow traction.

The performance run flats make your car a death trap in the snow with even the slightest acceleration on ice or snow and I don't believe an SUV should be like this (even if its an "SAV").

In my opinion comfort, handling, and safety are more important than being able to drive with a flat as I live in Brooklyn and there are plenty of 24 hour tire shops close to me. If you are worried about when you are driving far away I would just get a spare to throw under your cargo.

Does the BMW spare kit fit under the cargo floor if there is the tray thing there? Really want to get rid of the run flats if even just for the weght savings but our X5 is my wifes main car and I would feel better if she had a spare on board.

Tire rack has free shipping currently. I just ordered Michelin A/S 3's this am. Ditching the run flats at 11k miles.

So ... if you ditch the run flats, what tire pressure do you use? I doubt you would want 44psi in the rears on non-run flat tires. How do you arrive at the BMW specs for the tire size you go to when replacing the run flats?

$295 at bimmerzone.com. I don't have a jack as I'll call roadside assistance or AAA if I have a flat

Same tire size as run flats. 275/40 R20 front and 315/35 R20 rears. Follow tire mfg recommendation for pressure or tire rack can give guidance. I'll run 36 and 41 which is BMW spec. Go to tirerack.com and follow the prompts for your specific vehicle.
