As much as I love all of this. I think it's time to move this dyno convo to another thread fellas. Let's keep this about the muffler delete.

Good point, one should be made for 35i and 50i so people can see the comparisons and preferably with a baseline to see the gains. Sorry about contributing to the off topic subject but it’s hard to resist when others are posting.

I'll create a thread for 50i. Maverick is right - let's keep this thread for muffler delete (otherwise it will get very complex for new users to find info in this thread).

Lol love you both. Hope I didn't come off rude. Just wanted to hear more about all you're doing! And about people doing the muffler delete cuz I still need to do it. Dragging my feet a bit. Haha

Speaking of mufflers.....can we mod the muffler on the 50i like you could on the e90 platform? Keep everything stock looking but have that extra sound

Yes, it's possible. You'll need to cut it open and replace all perforated pipes with straight pipes. Then close muffler as it was before and weld it. You basically have a straight pipe going through muffler. So it will be almost same sound as this muffler delete mod (you'll still have to add/weld in x-pipe in mid section) but with a stock muffler still on the car. It's just extra work and probably extra $$, but it's doable.

Just tell them to install the X pipe (where the 2 pipes meet after the resonators and tell them to cut off the muffler at the rear and make sure that they leave enough piping to re-install/re-weld the muffler if you have to. (you have to on your case to return the lease) and basically they have to make 2 short pipes to reach the bumper opening and install the aftermarket Tips of your preference.

This muffler delete will sound drastically different, I mean it's loud. So you can't just return it like that after your lease ends (at least not without dealership noticing it). So you can just put muffler back before lease ends. I paid $280 for the job. And probably about same when you'll decide to put muffler back to return a lease. So consider it as a $600 mod in total. Whether it's worth it for you to spent that money to have deep V8 sound during your lease period - it's up to you man. You have to decide for yourself. For some people they couldn't care less about sporty V8 sound. For others (like me) a good sounding exhaust is important. Also, in comparison to buying an aftermarket sport exhaust for 50i like some Eisenmann or Akrapovich for $5-7k - this mod is basically pennies compared to those expensive exhausts. |

http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1507189 The problem is that neither of us has done a flash tune yet so there are no direct comparisons available.

It is not possible to "revert back to the OEM sound" unless you reinstall all the parts that were removed! Over time, the "tone" of an exhaust system may change slightly as mufflers wear in. However, in this case there are no mufflers and the remaining exhaust parts (resonators, cats, etc) are already "broken-in". Physics dictates that the volume of the exhaust will not change simply with the passage of time.

Any computer based adaptations to fuel, spark, timing, etc. happen fairly quickly and are so small that long term exhaust sound changes should be non-existent.

So glad I found this thread and thank you to all those who posted pics/videos. I pick up my '14 50i tomorrow and can't wait to have this done.
Anyone in the Houston area have this done? if so, where did you go? |

P.S. I think maybe, just maybe the only thing that changed after 300-400miles after first delete - was volumetric adjustments. I'm a noob, but could it be DME senses (via O2 sensors) a bit easier flow (due to muffler delete) and it changed a bit something (not really sure what, maybe corrected afr or something else). The only reason I'm saying it - is because right after delete - you get really loud rumble especially on acceleration. Then it changes a tiny bit, like someone turned volume knob one click down - that's what I thought was DME adjusting, but I may be completely wrong. I know that for example when changing stock cats to catless downpipes - DME adjusts for increased volumetric flow. I'm not sure how fast that adjustment is done, so I'm not at all an expert in this. It can also be I'm just imagining things or we get accustomed to loud exhaust quickly enough to think it's toned down a bit. Yeah, maybe it's just placebo effect. |
