Soon 2 B new X5 M owner
Got my production slot - delivery in about 4 weeks, give or take a bit.
Donington Grey Aragon Brown Carbon Fiber 21" Wheels Executive Package So, first of what will probably be many questions. Our current X5 has the running boards - they are a bit of a mixed bag, but help in getting into the vehicle. I can envision the door sills w/o running boards getting banged up quickly. Do any of you have any experience with after market solutions to protect the sills? I am thinking about Xpel. |

Your wrap sounds close to what we did on our current X5. It really does give peace of mind when you hear "stuff" whacking into your Bimm at 75 mph+.
I know BMW sells some illuminated sill protector but I hope to find some tougher plastic protection that I can fully step on day in and day out w/o damaging the paint work. |

People step on the door sills? I just step over them onto the floor mats. Even with three kids in the back the door sills look brand new with no protection.

Sadly, my wife has been programmed since birth to step on sills and finely finished wood thresholds - go figure.
At any rate I have arranged for the expel wrap so that should take care of my concerns on that topic. I am also considering a Clearplex windshield film as the road debris on I5 and 99 in California is never ending. My last M5 had all of 200 miles on it when the windshield got cracked from something bouncing across the median late one night on a desolate road with only one other car in sight. About a week later I had a huge green pine cone drop from a tree and ding the hood - saw it on the way down but too late to avoid Yes, some of us live under a black cloud. |

I am opting to put my topics in this thread as opposed to opening a lot of new threads all over the place.
There have been a number of complaints regarding the AC on the X5s some time ago. We live in a HOT climate and have found the AC on our 2017 X5 35i to do a good job - not a meat freezer or a blizzard maker but comfortable at 108F. However, our Bimm is almost always garaged and the AC has little heat loading to overcome. So, how is the AC on the 2017 or 2018 X5 M? |

Pretty sure the ac unit is the same for the X5M as you other X5. If you are okay with it now you should be fine.
Keeping the car out of direct sun seems to be the big difference. Personally, I am not always able to get covered parking at my office so I think the AC is insufficient.

On a more serious note, I think BMW has a fairly generous tolerance on damage at lease return time. If so, it is one more thing for me to consider in deciding between cash purchase (which I have always done) and a first time lease. BTW - those nails played hell on closing the doors |

I remember our posts on this topic from some time ago. That heat loading factor may be the big difference in our experiences. |

Production was completed and the X5 M was released to the carrier (truck or train?) yesterday. Now the painful wait for the trip to California - VPC - Dealer - PPF wrap and finally delivery. Fingers crossed for June still.
Now a question - and I have read most of the threads but want to see any new or different opinions. I went with the 21" wheels as the 20" wheel has only one tire option - Pirelli. I understand lower profile = crisper steering and harsher ride. So, what are the current thoughts on 20" vs 21" and current tire choices for the 21" that will be a bit more comfortable? California roads are probably not as bad as NY / NJ / winter states, but they are not as good as they use to be. No track time for me nor any .975 g runs. OTOH, it is an M and I don't want to compromise the crisp handling with sloppy tires. With my 21" choice, should I visit my dentist and have all fillings re-cemented ? |

I went from 20s to 21s (Pirelli to PSS) and the right got BETTER. Yep, better. Quieter, better handling, no change to ride quality, and wayyyyy longer tread life.
I firmly believe the Pirelli's are sub-standard tires when compared to the PSS, not even sure why BMW offered them beyond being the only size available.

onfireX5 - thanks - reasonably comfortable ride quality is what I am after. We do day trips that involve 8+ hours roundtrip - driving in sport+ and pushing it for that long is just plain exhausting. With a harsh ride the trips will be shorter and fewer I suspect.

Kind of a bump on the 20" vs 21" wheel/tire pros and cons?
Also, for those of you who have done a build to order, what was the transit time from SC to Oxnard VPC? BMWNA does not yet have a specific date but estimating around the 28th - that is two and a half weeks. I am wondering if they have put it on a trailer pulled by snails and turtles |
