Has anyone painted their exhaust tips?

I have a 2018 X6 50i and want my exhaust tips or whatever you call those giant square openings (wish they were dual tips) gloss black. Has anyone does that? I don't think they can come off and they are welded on, so I was thinking about putting some tape around the back and spray it with high heat gloss black paint. I wonder how that would look/work. Let me know if anyone has tried it. Thanks.

Most folks opt for powdercoating, which is more durable, but you will need to cut them.
But there are painting options out there, and yes, you have to cover the area around the bumper holes.

I had them cut off and powder coated.

If I just want to spray paint them with high heat gloss black spray paint to see how they look, that's not a terrible idea right?

Nope, I got black tips too, retrofitted for X5, from Porsche Cayenne no less. But do do your research. This is a high temp area, so make sure you put something that lasts, and won't melt away.
I would do powdercoating if I were you.
But it's exciting to do stuff on your own, no question!

You bought oem Black tips from Porsche for a cayenne and it fit the X5/6? Interesting.

Had to open bumper holes and quite a bit of work to weld them, may not be for you.
My suggestion is to powdercoat them. It works, a lot of members did it and are very satisfied. Can't go wrong.

I painted mine, removed the bumper cover when I was installing the invisihitch. Covered the car real well with plastic and painted away, 10 months later still perfect surface, no issues whatsoever. Used the VHT Roll bar and chassis paint, gloss black. Perfect smooth surface, as long as you maintain a wetline when you spray.

Black exhaust tips

Sadly, on the diesel, the tips are welded to the the pipes, and the pipes are welded to the muffler. Unless you cut them off, the tips need to be painted in situ. I painted mine using VHT rollbar and chassis gloss black paint (part #SP670) as recommended by RG sport.

I painted mine while I was installing the Stealth Hitch and had my rear bumper off. I did sand down the chrome to roughen the surface. I applied 4-5 coats and it looks great. It dries in 30 min, so can apply more coats relatively quickly. It takes about 24 hours to fully cure though. Now it looks great and does not seem like it will come off anytime soon.

No, just make sure you maintain a proper wet line and I highly recommend removing the bumper cover, makes it much easier and you can get all areas that way. One year later looks as good as it did a year ago. The paint is plenty shiny as is. Just clean them well and go.

Several on YouTube and on this forum if you search for tow hitch installs, stealth hitch, invisihitch etc.

I sanded mine to roughen up the surface. The VHT paint I specified above does not require primer. I put 4-5 coats on.

To remove the rear bumper cover, I used the instructions that came with my Stealth Hitch, which also happen to be online on their website. You will need to remove 3 rivets from each fender flare, so make sure you have the replacements ready since they are destroyed when you remove them. On a side note, the replacement rivets that Stealth Hitch supplies are not OE, and they are horrible. I purchased OE rivets from BMW so as to have the originals.

Good luck.

Looks clean. Nice touch with the black rims and blacked out emblem.

Thank you for defining my weekend! This looks amazing on white! Hopefully the AC Schnitzer figure 8 comes out looking as nice as that. After this I'll have virtually no chrome left on my SAV.

I'd recommend sanding it with fine sandpaper so that the paint can grab a hold to of the muffler tips. When spraying, move side to side fairly quickly so that you don't apply certain areas too heavily and cause runs. I also recommend 3 or 4 coats for durability and shine. I waited about 10 minutes per coat. I also applied 3 layers of clear coat to finish it off and here is the results.
