X5 35d longevity
Is it unreasonable to expect 150k miles of service from an X5 35d that has excellent service records, oil changed every 5k miles instead of 10k, and no mechanical issues since new? Current odometer is 20k miles. I understand things can happen, but I'm up in the air for another X5 vs a Lexus GX460. I had owned a Lexus GX 470 many years ago, and had no issues. Traded it for $18k with 140k miles on the odometer.
When I search out high mileage 35d's on Autotrader, it seems that there are very few, and the ones that are listed are advertised less than $10k. |

I am admittedly new to the diesel game but I thought the two huge benefits of diesel over gasoline are: a. Fuel economy and b. Motor reliability/durability.
I plan on keeping my X5 until the wheels come off... and I hope I am still on the original motor at that point.

Only time will tell. I say buy and try if you run into major problems get out of it. I have 50,000km trouble free so far. Plan to go to 100,000km. I know that's a far cry from 150k miles

Long term issue with the diesel is the potential for carbon buildup and the cost to remedy. Most modern engines (gas or diesel) can go 200K + miles without failure. It's the emissions gear the causes issues.

The issues with these are not with the motors but with the very complex emissions systems. Price out an SCR fluid reservoir or an SCR Cat. Price out the NOX sensors, or the DPF filter. All are very expensive and known to fail, especially at higher miles. The diesel emissions requirements have made diesel engines far less reliable than they used to be.

I plan to keep mine until around 90k miles (150 kms for us Canadian folks) and I've got a warranty to match that term. I've had my run of issues with this vehicle, but knock on wood, she seems to be fine now. I've got almost 90k on the odo. If you drive it, as in stretch its legs, keep up with your maintenance, and deal with issues as they arise, I don't foresee 150k miles being an issue.

I had a cooler go bad(so they said) but so far its been good since crossing fingers. I plan to hold onto mine for quite some time but the only issue is my wife barely drives it(just takes kids to school and around town), I know thats not the greatest thing for a diesel so I am hoping to get it out and about as much as I can to eliminate some of the carbon issues people seem to be having. Any recommendations anyone has for a very low mileage use diesel please pass them along. For reference we just sold her audi q5 2009 last month and it had 23k on it bought new that year.

30k trouble free miles so far. Plan on rollin up 200 k +. But that will be almost entirely highway miles. Around town, putting around miles are what kill these engines.

I am at 25K and had an exhaust gas cooler clog up at 10K. A recent software update is supposed to help reduce the carbon buildup. It also cost me 1.5 Miles per gallon of fuel mileage. It is probably a good idea to extend the warranty

I really hope this isnt true. Diesels are largely used around europe for putting around town and seem to hold up to the test. IF that is true and my engine will be "dead" before too long.

We have a '11 with 78k on it. It has run the gauntlet ~ home to office is less than 2 miles, but monthly round trip runs add 1k miles per trip. Other than the airbag recall (!), we only had two issues - got a check engine line (no drop in performance) and it turned out one of the emission sensors had gone bad (warranty), and after pulling into the garage we've had strong burnt oil smells ~ never been able to track it down. It's been a beyond-awesome vehicle, transporting 4 people and gear very quickly in absolute comfort ~and will drive endlessly between fill ups. "Three thumbs up!"

Yes I think its unreasonable to expect an X5 35d to go 150k miles without ANY mechanical issues. Check out the Diesel subform and you'll see the emissions parts just don't seem to have the reliability to get you there without a NOX sensor or SCR part malfunctioning. Will everything fall apart? No, just a pesky thing here and there. And resale? Ha, as you saw, theres no way in hell you'll get $18k for an X5 with 150k miles. After all that, I love my diesel and think its worth the extra $$ for the low end torque and sporty handling compared to anything Toyota/Lexus

So.... the real reason for this post was the fact that I'll be putting many more miles on with work over the next couple of years. After visiting the BMW dealer I bought my X5 from, I opted to trade it in for a Lexus. While the X5 is easily the best vehicle I've ever owned, I couldn't justify running into the ground with 30k+ miles/year for the next few years. I paid $62 for my X5 17 months ago (MSRP was $69) and I got just shy of $51k on trade. Factoring in savings on sales tax on the new vehicle, it was an additional savings of $2300, so basically my X5 only depreciated $10k over the past 17 months. Pretty amazing...

Help with 2009 X5d 140,000k Miles
Thanks for the thread information. I am new to the forum specifically to get help on deciding to keep my 2009 X5 D that I have loved, but it has had a couple of costly issues. I had to replace the DPF about a year ago. Now one of the Turbos has failed and is going to be about $2,500 to replace. The car has 140,000 miles on it now. Would love to keep it if I can get another 50-60k miles on it without major costs. Trying to judge if I'm throwing good money after bad. Thanks for any help.

Currently at 144,000 miles on a 2015 diesel
Hi All: I have a little over 144k miles on my 2015 X5 Diesel. It has been dealer serviced (BMW of Okemos in Michigan) by the book mile numbers. The only thing I have done so far is replace the rear brakes around 125k miles (also several tire change outs due to wear). The front still show pad left and should easily get to over 150k miles on them. Most of my miles are highway type, so not a lot of stop and go. The vehicle has exceeded my expectations with engine performance and the body still looks like new.

I love these threads
Gives me peace of mind I will always be able to pick up a 3 yr old CPO at a fraction of new cost and drive it for a longggg time. Yes I will have to replace parts but over a 7-10yr span, will have spent a pittance compared to the new car for life prople via 3 year leases and buy / trades |
