Shopping for preowned 2015 X5 xdrive35i

My 2015 528 xdrive lease is up next month. Therefore, I'm in the market for a 2015 X5 xdrive35i m sport. I've read some horror stories about the X5, but that comes with every BMW. The things I've heard are concerning so I would like to take my time picking a vehicle.

I've noticed a lot of X5s were sold at auction. Is it safe to say dealerships sell problem cars to auctions rather than sell them themselves? Should I stay away from cars sold at auction?

Also, I am willing to go 750 miles from home to purchase. Any advice on buying a car out of state?

Any positive responses would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The dealership's main mission is to move cars. So whether they can move them on their own, or via the auction, it doesn't matter. You can buy a complete POS from a dealership and a minty fresh X5 from the auction.

Owning an X5 out of warranty will always be a gamble, no two ways about it. If you want to play it somewhat safe, get yourself a low mileage CPO. My current X5 was bought from a dealership in Georgia. I live in Texas, and they took care of all the paperwork for me. I just had to make one quick trip to the DMV to pick up my plates, that's it.

Thanks! Good point. I've thought about purchasing an extended warranty, but it seems like they don't cover much.

Did go pick up your car or get it shipped?

I just had a guy ship it to me. I didn’t want it getting shuffled around on 18-wheelers and it just come to me in one shot.

Nice!! So you didn't physically see the car before purchase. No test drive? You're a brave man lol.

Not sure what a test drive would have achieved, but in regards to not seeing it in person, the sales guy there sent me plenty of photos and I had a guy on the forum go check it out for me in person.

2015 X5 models have been generally reliable. There is an active thread discussing this topic.
My wife's 2015 X5 is in the same category.

If you are a member of a credit union, most credit unions offer mechanical breakdown protection - much cheaper than BMW extended warranty.

N55 charge pipes are made of plastic so it's best to proactively replace it with Evolution Racewerks charge pipe around 50K miles.

I'm asking this since you explicitly mentioned 2015 X5 models are reliable. I'm in the market for a 2016 X5. Is 2016 better or at par or is it worse compared to 2015 ? I'm trying to pick the brains of the experienced folks here.

The original post indicated 2015 X5. No experience with 2016 X5 model.

I have a 2016 X5 3.5 s drive. It has 11k miles on it and it is as solid as it gets. My lease is up in 11 month. I am thinking of selling it (or have someone take over the lease if they can come-up with MSDs) because i have one too many cars.

If you had 75K miles, I think you could say it’s solid. But at 11K miles, your X5 hasn’t had time to start breaking yet...

I am going through a credit union, but I didn't know about mechanical breakdown protection. Great advice. Thanks!!!

OP, 35i's (N55) are said to be the most reliable. I purchased a '15 (non cpo) 35i xdrive mineral white on ivory with xline package with 54K miles on it back in May for $31K. This was lower priced then most I came across, but I purchased from a friend so he cut me a good deal. I'm loving it so far. Curious, around what price range you're finding?

Thanks for the feedback. I'm looking to be under 45k miles. So the price range I'm finding is between 34k to 40k. Pretty much everything below 35k was in an accident.

Fair enough but don't let the mileage detour you from a great deal. These 35i's are pretty solid. That being said I can see mileage being a concern because I plan on selling mine before it turns over 100K miles. That day will be sad though as I'm loving it.
