I'm roughly halfway in my drive from Vegas to DC w/my 2016 40e. I'm loaded to the gills with my wife, 2-small dogs, and a ton of stuff. Added to this is a Thule Terrapin hitch mounted carrier (clamshell thing) that's packed full too.

We've been driving with the suspension in "sport" mode as it wallows a bit too much otherwise. Tires aired up to max on the doorsill sticker.

We've faced "rare" weather with snow in Utah and Colorado the first two days. Summer Dunlops did fine in the slushy stuff and awesome in the wet, even with air temps in the low 30s.

We had favorable winds today which helped boost our overall mileage to >22mpg. I've run in Save Battery mode on the highway and then using the battery on the rest stop/gas station/hotel portions of the drive. No recharging of the battery on the drive so far.

Really happy with the way the 40e has performed. No issues at all on any of the mountain passes. It just pulled up the grades with all the power I wanted when I wanted it.

Taking it easy as far as the number of days to do the drive due to old dogs and no need to do marathon days.

Update: Now at a flat 24.0 mpg with an average speed of 71.3mph. Speedo error is about 2mph at 75mph according to Waze. Short day tomorrow will conclude the drive.

It seems to like the 93 octane gas I've been buying, though I think the slower speeds out east are the real reason the mpg's are going up. Certainly not moving along like we did when the roads were clear in NV, UT, CO, and KS.

Smile X5 Hybrid So many benefits

I just got my 2017 X5 Hybrid. Yes I work for a BMW dealer.

I have to say this X5 is an excellent drive. There is a definite learning curve in maximizing the electric drive. The performance is acceptable as I have no intention of racing the X5. When the power is needed the electric motor kicks in and between both motors I quickly and easily accelerate to pass or enter a highway.
I don't have the charger installed yet and the only outlet in my house that has enough power to charge is in our kitchen. My wife wasn't thrilled when I ran the superduty bright yellow extension cord through her kitchen, dining room, living room out the window for the first (and last) time. Yes I know i shouldnt be using an extension cord.

I've quickly learned a few things. In ECO mode, no charging takes place. In the other modes using save mode the battery constantly charges as I drive. As I have a 23 mile one way commute all highway, I've learned to charge the battery for the first 2/3rds of my commute and Max Electric for the remainder of my commute. Back and forth I am saving about 17 miles a day in gas. Once I install the charger at my house I will be adding to my fuel savings and using all electric locally. The ride is excellent as I would expect. Comfortable firm ride. The way this truck handles makes it hard to believe its a large SUV.

Nice write up. I had a X5 40e for a couple days as a loaner and I came to the same conclusion as you.

It's a nice ride, very comfortable and plenty of room for potential fuel savings. All in a 5000+ lb luxury SUV. This looks to be my next purchase as well.

Unfortunately I do not have a 240v wall outlet in the garage but I think the 120v charging will do for awhile as I'll just plug it in when I get home from work.

Anyone else received a letter from BMWNA about a voluntary emissions recall for the KLE in the '17 X5 eDrive?

Is it only for the '17?

...er, actually, it only calls out "17" in the campaign number. It basically says "we have determined your KLE may malfunction, please contact your dealer to get it tested under this campaign" and that it could be replaced.

I've been having pretty regular issues charging if the car gets too hot or the power from the wall fluctuates at all...so I'm hoping this campaign fixes my problems.

I did have some charging issues with my '16 xdrive40e, but not since it went in for service and had software update. I would be curious to find out if parts are being replaced or just software. Good luck!

I avoid using Save mode because it just kills the highway gas mileage. The amount of regen is not worth it.

Put your display to show instant MPG and switch between auto and save and you will see the difference.

I just got my car back tonight. The KLE was replaced under the recall after they did some testing and got the faults. I'll check how well it behaves with the temperamental L2 station we have in our complex. Here's to hoping the bad KLE was the root of my problems with charging!

If battery completely drained, I use save with sport to build up charge and then switch to auto or max edrive.

It was definitely a bad KLE.

All of my charging issues have been resolved. I'm able to charge without issue on what I thought was a twitchy L2 station at my complex as well as on the portable charger at my family's place.

There are two KLE chargers in the i3, for a 7.2 KW charge rate. All the plug-in BMW's use one of these for the 3.5KW charge rate. In the first release of the i3 in 2014, all of the KLE charging units were replaced under a service bulletin because of a "design fault" that caused failures. Subsequent i3's came with the redesigned KLE charger. I suspect that some of the plug-ins have the older, defective design that had to be replaced.

Hello - I have had 3 hyrbids (2 - 450h's and a Highlander). Never having plugged them in gave me about 22-25mpg. Anyone not plugging in, and just using brake regen for battery power; if so what setting are you using and your mpg? Any comparisons from x5d and going to 40e (I have x5d now). Biggest regret is lack of HP avail pushing from 55-75mph as much of my driving is highway on current x5d

No charging options right now - need to invent a charging pad for the garage so we don't need to plug in.

Thanks!

Has anyone found a rubber cargo mat that is made specifically for the 40e? Apparently the regular X5 one is not a clean fit.

Sure it's not "clean" but it fits fine and still gives access to the tie down hooks towards the gate and at the seats in the back. The 1 complaint is that it makes it difficult to get to the storage under the mat ad in the floor.

Who made this one. I have the one above it with the BMW logo and it doesn't fit well.

Does anyone know if alerts can be sent out if charging fails? IE someone unplugs the charger from the wall?

I charge at work using the L1 charger that comes with the car and someone thought it was cute to unplug the charger from the outlet and I didnt know until I got to the car.

I like to know if we can get alert, too.

I usually check my BMW Connected App during the day. It will show if my car is still being charged.

I thought the charge plug was locked in place when you locked the car? It makes a sound at the port as if it's locking it in...

If not then I better not leave the 120v slow charger plugged in in in public places thinking it can't be stolen
