Transmission Kicking 2nd / 3rd gear

Hey guys,

I went for a longer drive today to get to one of my jobsites and I noticed

when I climb hills it seems like the 2nd 3rd gears are kicking like its loosing

power or something. I was in efficient mode and If I try the same thing in

Sport or Sport + with the paddle shifters it seems like its not doing it.

Anyone ever had a similar problem? I tried searching for that but nothing

came out.

Ok after some more drive today it seems like it could be turbo related?! Even in Sport+ I get that loss of power when I accelerate.

Anyone??

Not sure I understand your description of problem, but I had misfiring or jittery power delivery type symptoms that ended up being a transfer case. No CEL or dash indicators came on. Sounds like you need to have it in for a mechanic to look at it.

It was indeed the transfer case oil that was pretty bad darkishh, changed the oil reprogram the car and everything was fine! ended up changing the spark plugs at the same time.

There were no metal shreds or pieces when they flushed the old oil so thats a good sign.

Excellent! Transfer case problems manifest strangely.

Perhaps the 1200 run in wasn't performed where I believe they change that fluid?

I took it to my local shop that are specialized in bmw and like I said they finally found out that the oil in the transfer case was bad. After a full flush and some new oil in it drives like new. Im at 80 000kms (49 000miles). Oil seemed to be the original one. They also changed all 8 spark plugs... maybe try a second opinion but not in a bmw dealer.

You'd need to provide more info. What did you take it to the dealer for? What are the symptoms?

Yeah, old transfer case oil can cause all manner of issues. I recall years ago when my E53 X5 (first gen X5) transfer case would make loud whining noise that would change pitch with engine speed. One friendly SA advised that I try changing the transfer case oil when everyone else (including my local BMW Indy) were saying the gears were kaput requiring a new transfer case. Flushed the oil myself, reset the transfer case software and, lo and behold, the noise gradually subsided and then completely stopped after a couple of weeks of driving.

Not sure if the xfer case oil is supposed to be lifetime, like the transmission, but if so that makes me nervous.

I had a new xfer case installed in mine under warranty at 38k.

Fluid changes for these systems seems to make sense at around 50k mile intervals.
