Buying 2017 X5 X35I
Hi everybody,
I am in the market to buy a CPO 2017 X5 - X35I. I love the car, love how it drives... my wife wants me to buy Lexus RX350 and tells me it is better than X5, because of reliability.. etc... and she has been showing me a lot of the issues X5 has. Just sacred that after the car runs out of warranty, how much in repair costs I should be looking at? I like to keep the cars until they die, is anybody here who has 2017 X5 and how many miles they have...? 1. What is average cost for service? 2. I would like to buy an extended warranty once the CPO runs out.. what are the charges on those? 3. Any major issues with these cars? Thank you in advance for your inputs! |

Mine is a 2018, and am at 15K with no issues. This is my first BMW and am very pleased with my choice. I’m not aware of any issues with the 2017, and will say that generally the F15 is a very well-built and solid platform. While no car is perfect (and certain BMWs, admittedly, are built better than others), the x35i has proven to be quite reliable.
Cost of extended warranty vary and depend on extent of coverage and duration; however, you are likely better off to put aside a certain amount of $ aside each month than to pay for an extended warranty up front. The RX350 will not be as enjoyable - or engaging - to drive or age as well as the X5; candidly, I find the design to be rather polarizing. My mom drove one for several years, and it was not without its share of issues. I also found it very uncomfortable to drive. |

I've got 34K miles on my 2017 xDrive50i, which I bought new. It's been maintained per the maintenance contract, plus a couple of oil changes I had done between scheduled changes. I haven't had a single problem. Meaning, I haven't once pushed a button or thrown a switch and not had it do exactly what it was supposed to do. No rattles or vibrations. Drives like new still.

It's always looked to me like it was designed by a 75-year old woman with huge hair who spends a lot of time playing slot machines. In the '80s she drove one of those GM cars with the fake convertible tops.

Seems odd to be cross shopping an RX350 & X5 IMO - the two cars could not be more different.
We recently test drove a new 2019 RX350, in an attempt to be more open minded about finding a replacement for our E70 50i, and the Lexus was the most boring, lull me to sleep vehicle I may have ever driven. Even my wife who doesn't care so much for power & performance said it nearly put her to sleep. The literature says it has a 295 HP V6... its felt like 195 HP, at best. If you covet reliability first and foremost, it will win out against a BMW, even a reliable one like an F15 35i. But don't plan to have a lick of fun driving it. |

We just bought a 2016 CPO. Your wife is correct in one sense - BMWs need to be maintained more/better than Japanese cars. If you can do anything yourself, even fluids, that will greatly reduce the upkeep costs. Join the local CCA chapter and go to the DIY events - a lot of fun and you'll meet some fellow owners.
The engine you're looking at is the N55, you can do some research on it. Think about runflat vs. regular tires, and if due to climate you need all seasons or second set. We were quoted $3,680 to extend CPO coverage one additional year, for a total of 6. We declined, too much IMO. But can change our minds later. GL and enjoy the search.

I just recently purchased a 2017 x35i with 30k miles coming from a 2012 135i.
When looking at x5s I did drive a x35i with 60k, the biggest difference was the suspension just needed to be replaced. To be honest I think any car at 60k would need new Shocks etc. The 135i also had the N55 reliable engine, I tracked it often with no reliability issues. Just be aware of the typical BMW gasket issues with the valve covers and Oil Filter Housing. BTW I do love this car, good pep, enjoyable to drive and very comfortable and don't have any regrets other than keeping the white leather clean! |
