How to disable ASD quickly in an X5M

1. Remove the driver side rear hatch area panel by pulling it open.

2. You will see the HK large silver finned Amp.

3. Reach under and go behind the amp and you will feel the ASD module.

4. Find the electrical connector toward the front of the X5M.

5. Push the small white tab in and slide the black locking lever over it.

6. Pull the connector off.

7. Reinstall the hatch area panel.

8. Finished in 60 seconds....

The first pic shows the HK amp

The second pic is what the and module and connector looks like behind the amp.

I think I got it.

I went behind the amp (literally the opposite side to the fins), and felt for the plug which was on the front of car end of what felt like another heat-sink on the back.

I couldn't see the plug, but it felt like what you show in image 2. I'm sure I disabled the right cable - it's on the back (outside wall) of the rear 1/4.

After going for a drive however, the sound I have been describing is still there. It did seem like the cabin was quieter, which I assume is ASD being disabled.

However the artificial electronic sound is still there. It's very obvious when coming off the throttle and the engine is revving down.

Really lost at this point.

I really like the exhaust note with it unplugged, but I am a purist. Nothing wrong with their fake sound, I just like it real.

Are you getting a static type sound that goes up and down with the rpm ? Hate that you are having issues.

As soon as I got in the car I thought I could notice the difference in sound.

It was as if the cabin was quiet for the first time with only the exhaust sound from the rear.

The only issue is this sound i'm describing, which I wouldn't call static.

I've taken a video which you can just hear it toward the end.

Link above.

As you can hear in the video, aside from the exhaust sound, there is this almost constant higher pitched noise.

That is different. Seems louder at decel. I would have the dealer check that out. Hopefully, it is something simple.

Yes, most noticeable when decelerating. This is what I thought I was disabling when turning off ASD.

I always thought it was odd as I hadn't really noticed anything else which might be ASD.

In saying that, like I mentioned before, the cabin is certainly quieter with the cable unplugged.

Took a friend for a drive with me and he came to the same conclusion that I had.

This odd sound is similar to an audio and power cable being run together.

I used to come across this years ago as a kid from installing our own car stereos.

Back OT however, here's a picture showing what onfireX5 first picture would look like laying down below the amp looking forward.

This is the outside edge of the car on the left, showing the ASD cable unplugged and the LHS heatsink - to the right of that is the amp.

I just did this..I much prefer non-asd now even if it may be a touch quiet for me overall. The asd doesnt/didn't annoy me as much as in my f80 though

Has anyone ever had any success in getting the dealer to disable ASD for them? I have an X5 M on order and asked the dealer to do it for me.

They can code it off or pull the plug for you.

I'm pretty darn sure the dealers (here at least) can't code it off. I'm pretty sure they can't do any of the "elective" coding that we do, since some of it violates safety rules/laws (like turning off the seatbelt and stupid start-up disclaimer, changing some of the external lighting functions, etc.). For ASD, they can't code it off most likely for liability or warranty issues, or some baloney like that. So you've got to go to other shops, or DIY. Good news is it's inexpensive and easy for shops to do and many have had success DIY. HTH

What do you need to code off the items you mentioned above and how do you do it?

hey there scott - do a quick search on this forum and the m3 forum (which gets more traffic) - there's tons of info on coding. HTH!

I picked up my new X5M a couple of weeks ago and have been loving it, but the one area that it seems wanting is interior sound. It is certainly aggressive, but doesn't seem very refined. I was actually beginning to think that there was something wrong with the ASD in my car.

So, I unplugged it this morning before going on a 20-mi drive up the highway and through some city streets. I drove with it in Efficiency and Sport+ modes (flaps closed and open). To me, the sound was the same, just less of it. The tones seemed the same, just less volume. I stopped for gas and plugged it back in to get a back-back perspective...and it validated my perspective: ASD pretty much just increases the same sounds that are already being generated. I know ASD does use artificially generated sounds, but to me it's about the same.

To me, if BMW knows that the sound needs to be improved enough to create a system such as ASD, it seems they would have found a better sound to pipe into the interior. It doesn't sound bad, but it certainly could be improved upon.

I've had a 911 with the Sound Symposer and my wife has a current Beetle Turbo with a similar solution...those are awesome. Her car sounds like an old air-cooled VW/Porsche from the interior, I love the sounds in her little car.

I'll be keeping my ASD active as I think it's better turned on as opposed to unplugged. I'd love to find a hack to insert different engine tones though

I'm not sure that it is an artificial sound in the X5M. I thought it was piped in somehow?

I've still got ASD unplugged as it makes for a quieter cabin and seems less forced.

You've found an appreciable difference in sound quality on your B&O after disabling ASD? What would account for that difference since I would assume it's just another audio track being mixed in with your music?
