Here's example of how mine looks and my service advisor happily ordered new part under warranty.
"He mentioned that we usually have to fix it first, then he's like If i fix now you will be back again in a month to replace it so without any hassle will just replace it. Last edited by worldmast3r; 05-13-2019 at 11:33 PM.. |

I'd be afraid to tackle it myself though. You may want a professional auto upholstery guy do it for you, unless you're so inclined. The part numbers are the same IIRC, at least for my F85 it was.

I did mine in a couple hours. One thing you may need is hog rings and pliers to attach seat cover to metal bars in foam. I didn't have any so I just reinstalled with zip ties. No problems. |

Really that easy huh? I do have the hog ring pliers & hog rings. But since mine's still under warranty, I'll ask my SA later this month when I go for new brakes. Thanks for the tip though, good to know!

Sometimes at dealer they would do it for nominal charge but it's kinda hard luck. Depending on your relation with Service advisor. |

Wow... I just checked my car and it's doing the same thing... I'm really shocked and angry at the same time.. both sides almost equally ... even though 80% of the driving is done by me as a sole driver... unfortunately I'm already over 130k and nowhere near warranty...
I mean... what in the world... I wonder if different side material was disclosed... I feel like I was mislead to think it's the same material for the whole seat... ...wonder how much that would be to fix...and not in a way where it happens again like that... |

Here are before and after repair (not replacement) on a CPO that I am considering buying. I asked and they advisor said no to warranty but not sure how hard they pushed.

Looks like they did a decent job. Wonder how long it will be before it cracks again

Not really. The side is vinyl not leather.
If you want to prevent the cracks, don't crush the side bolster getting out, avoid sliding off seat. It sucks. But I lift my butt up and then out to prevent seat wear. I can't stand worn out seats! Lol |

I've seen standard and comfort seats have the cracking. Is it a certain leather option or color where the seat sides come in leather instead of vinyl? Or did bmw switch to leather sides at a certain year?

BMW NA declined my claim.
And to be honest I don't know why. My 2017 X5 is only 1.5 years old with 27,000km (16,000 miles) What should I do? Should I shoot an email to BMW NA? Or try and resolve this with the service Manager? Any feedback is welcome Thanks everyone |

I had a claim declined, then was able to have it overturned (wheel corrosion). But BMWNA was worthless in this situation. They provided absolutely zero assistance.

Here’s a photo of mine. ‘16 model with 35k miles. Upon purchase had a “we owe” agreement with the dealership to have the seat replaced.
In the photos you can see two affected areas, bottom one seems like is from usual wear, the other (top) is the weird “slashes” in leather. The SA agreed that due to the location of the cracks, it would be best to replace than repair. Either way, waiting for the part to come in, will update when all done. |
