Find another dealer. You DEFINITELY should get 10% or more off especially for one on the lot. Good luck!

Try my buddy George Javier over at Rallye BMW.

I am currently working on my 5th BMW (X5M) with him. The level of service I've been getting st Rallye is second to none.

Tell him Alan L. referred you.

In the northeast, the majority of discounts I've found on in-stock X5Ms are very meager - 5-6% off MSRP. This includes cars that have been on the lot for months at this point.
you need to shop it to death. Then you need to get actual commitments by email. I've gotten to $1k below invoice and still massaging the deal. I'm willing to wait till the new models if I can get a good deal on either year. Let me know how you do.

I'm working a couple of angles. I'm just surprised that some folks are claiming 10+% off sticker is common. The X5M has about 7% markup over invoice. Going below invoice is now in dealer holdback/reserve territory, plus whatever other under the table incentives they may have with BMW. For a limited production car that sells well (apparently), most of them aren't interested in even coming close to that price. I've talked to dealers (with an X5M in stock) from NH all the way down to VA/DC area and everything in between. I even asked a west coast dealer, and although they were more aggressive than the east coast, it was not in the 10% range.

I suspect the folks that got 10+% did so in part because there was some BMW support/incentives at the time. Currently there aren't any real incentives (1k perhaps) to make that easy.

I guess it's the wrong time of year for car deals. Seems like most of the deals are December and January where the people are getting 10% off.

A lot has to do with how man allocations your dealer has for an X5M. From what I was told dealers don't get as many M allocations as they do for regular X5's so they want to make as much profit on each car as possible.

96 would be a killer deal, 100 reasonable, 104 ok. Lot of variables. Location, dealer size, etc.

Anything near invoice "without incentives baked in". Too greedy gets you a no response on their end. Most likely the number ends a few grand north of invoice. Throw in any incentives and it's a win.

I could order one to my specs for right above invoice, wouldn't be worth getting one off the lot for that.

It's in Dallas. I hear the Dallas dealers are awful.

There is one on swapalease in san antonio though that I would like to negotiate on. Can't believe I have to pay $60 just to talk to the guy.

Have never had to deal with BMW dealerships in Dallas. I've had some experiences in Houston, and those places are so incredibly busy that they simply don't have time for you unless you catch them on a slow day.

Are you saying you have to pay $60 just to send a message to someone on swapalease?

Yeah, there doesn't seem to be a way around paying the $60. Some people put their phone number in the description, this guy didn't.

96 would be a steal, literally - that's 15% off MSRP. 100 (12%) would be great. Keep in mind that there's 7% markup over invoice, and then dealers have a 5% reserve that they may collect only a portion of depending on other variables. At best, dealer breaks even at 12%, and that won't happen. So without BMW support via incentives, 10-11% should be considered a great deal, I think.

Your biggest leverage with the dealer is the M will be a model year old in 2 months. Plus their interest carrying cost.

Yes, come Aug/Sept they may get more aggressive if they have leftover 16s. Currently, supply is fairly low. However, I was told that most Ms are leases - buyers typically don't care what year the car is so long as there's nothing radically different in the newer model and they get a discount. All that to say they don't appear too worried at the moment about this issue. I even had one dealer claim they're less worried about leftover 16s this time around because the maintenance plan is changing yet there're no compelling new model year changes.

I also thought carry costs would be something they'd be interested in avoiding, but after a surprisingly candid conversation with a dealer, it turns out those costs aren't a big factor.

The "trick" to find the best deal is to cast a wide net and find that one dealer who wants to move an in-stock vehicle or even sell an ordered one at a small profit. If you find a dealer that can collect the full 5% reserve, they may be willing to shave a few of those % off and you can buy below invoice. However, it's basic economics at the end of the day - if there's sufficient demand for their M cars or sales are otherwise adequate, they won't budge much. The consumer has the advantage of buying a fungible product and there are many dealers to choose from if one doesn't restrict themselves geographically.
