the squeal is inevitable! It will come and go, so be prepared to be episodically frustrated and then it disappears. My suggestion is to accept the occasional noise for the idea that you are driving something special. I know that sounds lame, but it's what I tell my family.

I'm sure this has already been posted several times, but the BMW service department clearly doesn't want to hear about our issues with loud brakes.
I took my 2015 BMW X5M in for service last week and when the SA was asking me if there was anything else I wanted looked at, I just mentioned the loud brakes and I could instantly see the look on his face change to "oh no, here we go again", to which he commented that this is 'normal' for an M car with performance brakes. The only thing thats 'somewhat' stopped it for me is washing the wheels and it'll stop for a short while, but it comes back soon after that...

Looking myself to try some softer pads to avoid squealing (even if softer pads will wear x2-3 times faster). I have f85 rotor and E70 X5M calipers - oem M pads are horrible. Going to order something soon. At this point I'll gladly compromise pads life for some silence.

I think ours our made by Brembo - I know for a fact another member here swapped to a different type of pad, but it did not help.
EDIT - read page 3 and 4 of this thread, JNosol was the member that tried just about everything, no remedies. I gave up a long time ago, will just turn it in in May, but it will be a deciding factor in what my wife gets next.

I thought I have reply to this before.
And yes, it is annoying that an expensive SUV has brake pads that sound like they are on their last leg. The way it was explained to me by the lead technician. And we did go out for a ride together. The squeal noise is kind of tough to ignore. But after a few rides around the block. It went away. That is as soon as the brake pads heat up from use. The brake pads no longer has Asbestos in them. Due to health issue when servicing. They are now either ceramic or metallic. And when they are cold...it makes that grinding noise. So morning start or even coming off the highway. It will tends to be at its worst. |

ep99 - the question that comes to mind is that NO brake pads have asbestos in them today - all are metallic or ceramic (or whatever) - so why don't all brakes squeal - high performance or not?

Lol so I have to now find some asbestos brakes. That's why I thought some cheap knock-off pads might be actually quiet. But if JNosol tried a lot of them and still no solution - then I don't know.

Not sure about other performance brakes.
I have owned two X6M before. 2013 one...no brake issue except for a known battery problem. 2016...squeal like a SOB from day one. Just picked up a 2018 X6M last week. I thought I have heard squealing...doesn't sound like BMW care about fixing this ignoring issue to the owners. |

Somewhere in here there is a video that someone linked from Porsche explaining why performance brakes squeal from resonating... guess enough owners complained that they made a video to tell them to buzz off!
Found it!

You guys sorta have me worried about this squeal. Hopefully my wife doesn't become annoyed with the sound. We pick up on Tuesday.
