2018 Incentive Roller Coaster

We have a 2007 X5 4.8 with just over 100k miles and have loved it for the past four years we've owned it.... sunk a few bucks into valve cover and timing cover gaskets - but for the most part have put 50,000 easy breezy miles on it since purchasing it from a friends Dad.

However, we began looking at taking advantage of the outgoing "deals" on a 2018 xdrive 35i. The incentives for the past 3 or 4 months have totaled $4,500 in our case (financing, loyalty, corporate).

I have been in touch with a dealership that had a car on the lot that fit the bill and was aggressive with the advertised price. I spent some time on the phone with a very groovy sales guy and he shot me some numbers today.

The financing incentive has dropped by 1k and it's his contention that as the remaining 2018 inventory gets tighter, the incentives will shrink and even go away completely (probably not loyalty or corporate).

This thinking is the opposite of most everything I've been reading about how the next few months may play out. While he seemed quite genuine..... he is a salesman in the end. However, I'm wondering if perhaps he may be on to something and waiting may backfire.......

Thoughts??

My first thought is, he's a salesman. He's trying to maximize profit so his commission is bigger. They need to get rid of old inventory to make room for the new, seems unlikely that incentives would go away completely. Just my personal thought. Also, the closer you get to end of the month the better the deals get. If they haven't met their quota(dealership) they tend to do better pricing. Again, my opinion.

Tell him you expect $6000 in incentives or no deal. Play hard ball! There are lots of dealers.

Lauderdale BMW sent me a letter offering $5500 in incentives. It should take much to get another $1000

You either qualify for certain incentives.... or you don't. I don't think demanding more $$ for incentives is possible. In my state.... we are still taxed on the incentive portion (not by how much the dealer themselves discount the vehicle).

I'm really trying to wrap my head around whether a shrinking inventory of 2018's will spur more incentives/dealing or less.... and I'd like to know what others think.

Obviously this will become more "real" when the 2019's hit the ground.

I'd wait until the new model comes out, unless you get a smoking deal. Otherwise you'll have a brand new "old" model that will depreciate hard.

Is that almost 20% off MSRP? Sounds really great on a brand new X5.

Can you share the breakdown of your discount?

It's a military discount buying direct from bmw overseas. I get the vehicle shipped to Europe and get free shipping back to the states when I leave.

I had experienced the exact same response from multiple local dealers on both new and used X5's. I ended up finding a CPO that was my exact wants for a build and decided to go with that although it was a 2017. Even having it shipped motor freight, the price was too good to pass up.

And you aren’t paying state sales tax either (at least right now depending on your state). I bought a new fully loaded 2013 X1 while in Germany for a pretty good discount. And I didn’t have to pay sales tax when I shipped it to the US. Nebraska does not collect sales tax on vehicles previously registered elsewhere by the same owner.

$4500 sounds a little low

I took delivery on my X5 last month and received around $9,000 off of my MSRP.

The dealers should be able to do at least the same if not better since the G05 is coming soon and they want to clear out as many F15s as possible (don't let them tell you otherwise)

I'm only talking BMW Manufacturer incentives here folks...... The $3500 financing incentive has been lowered to $2500. The $1000 loyalty and $500 corporate incentive are still in place and should be until at least 1/1/2019.

My original question is what people think of the financing incentive being lowered by 1k? Is this a trend or a blip?

It sucks but what can you do about it? The big question is how much you're getting off overall.
