Leasing in Texas is BS. Double taxation. How is this allowed to go on?

It's based around the change in title. You can do a flexible lease that doesn't get you double taxed. We're tacking six months onto our F30 preferred lease to wait for the 2019 Q3 and won't have to pay tax on that extension.

Let's say I pay off the car today. They mail the title to me, in my name, & then the day I get the title I sell the car to Carmax. It's already registered in my name. So why do I need to pay tax in this scenario?

It's *registered* in your name but VW owns the car. If you buy the car from them at the end of the lease term, that's a change in ownership and tax would be due.

Why would you buy the car and then trade it to Carmax? Just trade it directly and Carmax will settle your lease and pay you cash for any remainder. That way you won't be out tax either.

Even for less than 24 seconds.

Is it BS? Sure. That's why the state (not dealer) mandates it.

We are staying away from VW altogether, after getting caught up with the dieselgate scandal with my wife's Jetta.

Everyone I know who was "caught up with the dieselgate scandal" ended up pretty happy with the settlement. Didn't they buy it back for exactly what you paid for it, essentially driving it for free during your ownership tenure?

Well, I cannot complain about the check we got compared to the age of the car (MY 2010). However, the whole thing was a bother and we felt lied to. There was months wondering about whether they would fix the problem or buy back the cars and what the compensation would be with a buy back. It certainly was not a buy back for what we paid for it. In then end it did work out. We got a newer car for my wife, plus a beater for our son. Still would not consider another VW.

Hasn't the "dieselgate" vw problem also been acknowledged as a common place problem by all the european manufacturers.

We rode in an Atlas on an Uber ride to the airport last month. Super nice!

In FL neither Audi nor VW are authorized dealers. In order to buy an Audi or VW car out of a lease here, you have to do it through a dealer. The dealer then tacks on dealer fees to the buyout (even if not early / just buying out at the end of the lease). I learned this when I was going to buy out my 2013 Audi S4 at the end of the lease. Now I drive a BMW and will never consider financing through AFS again.

Someone else I know had a similar experience with a leased VW they were trying to sell to CarMax recently. VW wouldn’t even quote him a buyout amount directly without going through a dealer. VW gave a price much higher (as in more than $10K higher - higher buyout than original new car MSRP) to CarMax than a VW dealer who didn’t even want to buy the car. He eventually got it sorted but had to threaten calling a lawyer.

Didn't you read my post? I tried to sell it to Carmax directly & VW scumbags blocked it. I'm not buying another car, just getting rid of this one.

I suspect Texas doesn't have a annual tag fee (eg, ad valorem).

GA did something similar.

Does PA levy an annual ad valorem tax on cars? The tax is usually a couple of hundred dollars and decreases as the car ages.

You're talking about property tax (we have it in CT). He is talking about sales tax on a transfer of ownership.

oh I guess they could have both. Forgot about that. My state wrapped both into one payment which is made to the state whenever title is transferred and registered.

Only state registration which is based on gross behicle weight rating, and inspection which is based on fuel type for which are emissions compliant for gassers and cost around $40. Diesel are safety only and are $11 for an inspection, no emissions.
