I find the squealing goes away after detailing, so that makes sense.

They said replacement is required at 3mm. Then they told me that M brakes (blue calipers) have a tendency to squeal because the pads will put a film on the rotors. They then told me if the squealing returns, do a hard brake from about 40mph to try to remove the film.
Although they did nothing to the brakes, other than measure the pad thickness, the brakes haven't squealed. So, I haven't been able to test this procedure yet.
Yes this is exactly why they squeal and most say after a wash or aggressive driving it gets better for a time. Problem is it shouldn't happening.

I agree. What if the pads are truly warn? How would you know? It must be a design issue with the pads that should be correctable.

If only we had an option for carbon ceramic brakes at time of purchase, then we could be spending $10-20k for new brake pads. But no dust!

No dust and what 75k miles? Idk I just made that number up but I know I'm going on 45k with my oem 50i pads.

Called Powerstop. No callback as promised. The lady I spoke with this time could only lookup parts on the website (with my help). No knowledge of the Z23 compound availability for the front of the X5M. Sigh... I'll probably just put on the compatible Z23-1648 fronts. Getting tired of waiting.

Took my f85 in for brake noise, apparently sept 1 2018 bmw released a new bulletin for front brakes with new part number to eliminate the brake noise. Having it installed tomorrow, will keep everyone updated.

Same thing as mentioned back in September lol. We are aware. Many are running the "new compound" and some still get squealing.

I gave up on the constant brake noise even with the "new" compound. I installed hawk HPS 5.0 pads all around today and will keep everyone updated on how these work out after a few weeks.

New X5M owner here and have been following this thread as well as others. Has anyone had a successful dealership/warranty fix yet? FYI i know nothing about brakes so I apologize in advance! I have an appointment tomorrow and want to make sure they are prepared to fix if possible.

I keep hoping things will improve with my Hawk pads but I have to say I am disappointed with the pedal feel. They are quiet but they don't have the bite I am looking for. I run PFC11's on my track car so my frame of reference is probably different than most.

I am am going to clean calipers and put factory pads back on when I have some time.

Has anyone tried the Posi Quiet semi-metallic brake pads? These are available in F85/F86 specific sizes but I have not seen any reviews yet.

as much as I agree with you with the hawks they're doing the job for me but again I'm far from tracking the car, no shortage from stopping but yes maybe the initial bite isn't there due to the compound that squeaks and dust badly, I was at a point where I would avoid braking

Did you know that the designer of the M-Brakes has terms for the different types of noise?

Terms like "Wet Honking", "Hole Humming" and "Traffic Light Groaning" ??

I found this M-Video with THE BMW Brake Engineer's explanation....

almost spit out my coffee watching...

I just had my brakes replaced by Open Road BMW in Edison NJ. Great group of people there. Can’t say enough good things about the experiences I had there. By the way, if you can reach Dave in parts, and ask for club pricing, mention xoutpost or xbimmers and you will get a fat discount on parts. They got a club discount thing there. But that’s not the point of this post.

They replaced my brakes after my 1 and only complaint. Pads, shims sensors. 3 pages of invoice. They replaced my pdc wire harness in rear, and pass mirror camera, so that added to the 3 pages.

Anyway. Brakes felt like shit initially, but no squeal. 1k miles and they seem to be getting more bite, and squealed 1 time so far. This is nothing compared to what was happening to me before. I was like a damn freight train making a 90 degree turn every time I touched brakes. It was so annoying that I was trying to modulate braking trying not to squeal. Only time will tell. I will update as time goes. All no charge. 2017 f85 Under warrantee.

Today I brought my car to the dealer for the noise in my brakes and the service guy said that a normal noise but in my case is very loud noise and him says him could not help me with that and him gave me a brochure where can I see that is normal In cars with M brakes, and inside of me I though what this guy want me to do with this ? Some body can tell me or any suggestions for how can I get that noise fix?

Read my reply above. Go to Open Road BMW, in Edison NJ, ask for Jimmy, and show him your complaints. I just had my brakes changed by them. So far no noises.
